He did not want to do so in Judea because the Jews were out to kill him. 1 After these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee, for he wouldn’t walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2 But as it was almost time for the Jewish festival of the Tabernacles, 2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was at hand.
3 his brothers told him, “You ought to leave and go to Judea so your followers will be able to see what miracles you can do. 3 His brothers therefore said to him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see your works which you do.
4 No one who wants to be famous keeps what they do hidden. If you can do such miracles, then show yourself to the world!” 4 For no one does anything in secret while he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, reveal yourself to the world.”
5 For even his own brothers really didn't believe in him. 5 For even his brothers didn’t believe in him.
6 Jesus told them, “This is not my time to go, not yet; but you can go whenever you want, for any time's the right time for you. 6 Jesus therefore said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.
7 The world has no reason to hate you, but it does hate me, because I make it clear that its ways are evil. 7 The world can’t hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it, that its works are evil.
8 You go on to the festival. I'm not going to this festival because this is not the right time for me, not yet.” 8 You go up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because my time is not yet fulfilled.”
9 After saying this he stayed behind in Galilee. 9 Having said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee.
10 After his brothers left to go to the festival, Jesus also went, but not openly—he stayed out of sight. 10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.
11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were searching for him and kept on asking, “Where is he?” 11 The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, “Where is he?”
11 οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ ἔλεγον· ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος;
12 Many people in the crowds were complaining about him. Some said, “He's a good man,” while others argued, “No! He deceives people.” 12 There was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others said, “Not so, but he leads the multitude astray.”
13 But no one dared to speak openly about him because they were afraid of what the Jewish leaders would do to them. 13 Yet no one spoke openly of him for fear of the Jews.
14 When the festival was halfway through, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach. 14 But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
15 The Jewish leaders were very surprised, and asked, “How does this man have so much learning when he hasn't been educated?” 15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never been educated?”
15 καὶ ἐθαύμαζον οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες· πῶς οὗτος γράμματα οἶδε μὴ μεμαθηκώς;
16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not from me but from the one who sent me. 16 Jesus therefore answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.
17 Anyone who chooses to follow what God wants will know if my teaching comes from God or if I'm only speaking for myself. 17 If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God or if I am speaking from myself.
18 Those who speak for themselves want to glorify themselves, but someone who glorifies the one who sent him is truthful and not deceitful. 18 He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
19 Moses gave you the law, didn't he? Yet none of you keeps the law! Why are you trying to kill me?” 19 Didn’t Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill me?”
19 οὐ Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὸν νόμον; καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ποιεῖ τὸν νόμον. τί με ζητεῖτε ἀποκτεῖναι;
20 “You're demon-possessed!” the crowd replied. “No one's trying to kill you!” 20 The multitude answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill you?”
20 ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ὄχλος καὶ εἶπε· δαιμόνιον ἔχεις· τίς σε ζητεῖ ἀποκτεῖναι;
21 “I did one miracle and you're all shocked by it,” Jesus replied. 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one work and you all marvel because of it.
22 “However, because Moses told you to circumcise—not that it really came from Moses, but from your forefathers before him—you perform circumcision on the Sabbath. 22 Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a boy.
23 If you circumcise on the Sabbath to make sure that the law of Moses isn't broken, why are you angry with me for healing someone on the Sabbath? 23 If a boy receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath?
24 Don't judge by appearances; decide what is right!” 24 Don’t judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”
25 Then some of those from Jerusalem began wondering, “Isn't this the one they're trying to kill? 25 Therefore some of them of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this he whom they seek to kill?
25 Ἔλεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν· οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι;
26 But see how openly he's speaking, and they're saying nothing to him. Do you think the authorities believe he's the Messiah? 26 Behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is truly the Christ?
26 καὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ, καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσι. μήποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ Χριστός;
27 But that's not possible because we know where he comes from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where he's from.” 27 However, we know where this man comes from, but when the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from.”
28 While he was teaching in the Temple, Jesus called out in a loud voice, “So you think you know me and where I'm from? However, I did not come for my own sake. The one who sent me is true. You don't know him, 28 Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know me, and know where I am from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you don’t know.
29 but I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” 29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”
30 So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him because his time had not yet come. 30 They sought therefore to take him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
31 However, many of the crowd did put their trust in him. “When the Messiah appears, will he do more miraculous signs than this man has done?” they said. 31 But of the multitude, many believed in him. They said, “When the Christ comes, he won’t do more signs than those which this man has done, will he?”
31 πολλοὶ δὲ ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ, μήτι πλείονα σημεῖα τούτων ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ἐποίησεν;
32 When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering this about him, they and the chief priests sent guards to arrest Jesus. 32 The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.
33 Then Jesus told the people, “I'll be with you just a little longer, but then I'll return to the one who sent me. 33 Then Jesus said, “I will be with you a little while longer, then I go to him who sent me.
34 You'll search for me but you won't find me; and you can't come where I'm going.” 34 You will seek me and won’t find me. You can’t come where I am.”
35 The Jews said to each other, “Where could he be going that we couldn't find him? Is he planning to go to those scattered among the foreigners, and teach the foreigners? 35 The Jews therefore said among themselves, “Where will this man go that we won’t find him? Will he go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
35 εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς· ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι, ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν; μὴ εἰς τὴν διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας;
36 What does he mean by saying, ‘You'll search for me but you won't find me; and you can't come where I'm going’?” 36 What is this word that he said, ‘You will seek me, and won’t find me;’ and ‘Where I am, you can’t come’?”
36 τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ λόγος ὃν εἶπε, ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετε, καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγώ, ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν;
37 On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted out in a loud voice, “If you're thirsty, come to me and drink. 37 Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!
38 If you trust in me, you will have streams of life-giving water flowing out from within you, as Scripture says.” 38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.”
39 He was referring to the Spirit that those who trusted in him would later receive. The Spirit hadn't been given yet because Jesus hadn't yet been glorified. 39 But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.
40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This man is definitely the Prophet!” 40 Many of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, “This is truly the prophet.”
41 Others said, “He is the Messiah!” Still others said, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “What, does the Christ come out of Galilee?
41 ἄλλοι ἔλεγον· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός· ἄλλοι ἔλεγον· μὴ γὰρ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται;
42 Doesn't Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David's lineage, and from David's home town of Bethlehem?” 42 Hasn’t the Scripture said that the Christ comes of the offspring of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”
42 οὐχὶ ἡ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυῒδ καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ τῆς κώμης, ὅπου ἦν Δαυΐδ, ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται;
43 So the crowd had a strong difference of opinion about him. 43 So a division arose in the multitude because of him.
44 Some wanted to arrest him, but nobody laid a hand on him. 44 Some of them would have arrested him, but no one laid hands on him.
45 Then the guards returned to the chief priests and the Pharisees who asked them, “Why didn't you bring him in?” 45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said to them, “Why didn’t you bring him?”
45 Ἦλθον οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους, καὶ εἶπον αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι· διατί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν;
46 “Nobody ever spoke like this man does,” the guards replied. 46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!”
47 “Have you been fooled too?” the Pharisees asked them. 47 The Pharisees therefore answered them, “You aren’t also led astray, are you?
47 ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι· μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε;
48 “Has a single one of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him? No! 48 Have any of the rulers or any of the Pharisees believed in him?
48 μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν ἢ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων;
49 But this crowd knows nothing about teachings of the law—they're damned anyway!” 49 But this multitude that doesn’t know the law is cursed.”
50 Nicodemus, who had previously gone to meet Jesus, was one of them and asked them, 50 Nicodemus (he who came to him by night, being one of them) said to them,
51 “Does our law condemn a man without a hearing and without finding out what he actually did?” 51 “Does our law judge a man unless it first hears from him personally and knows what he does?”
51 μὴ ὁ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνει τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ πρότερον καὶ γνῷ τί ποιεῖ;
52 “So you're a Galilean as well, are you?” they replied. “Check the Scriptures and you'll discover that no prophet comes from Galilee!” 52 They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”
53◆ Then they all went home, 53 Everyone went to his own house,
