1 A psalm of David. A song of praise. I will glorify you, my God and King! I will praise who you are forever and ever! 2 I will praise you every day; I will praise your character forever and ever! 3 The Lord is great and deserves much praise! His greatness cannot be measured! 4 Let every generation tell the next all that you do, sharing the stories of your amazing miracles! 5 They will speak of your majesty, your glorious splendor, and I will meditate on the wonderful things you have done. 6 They will speak of the power of your awesome actions, and I will say how wonderful you are. 7 They will explain to everyone how famous you are for your tremendous goodness, and joyfully celebrate how you always do what is right. 8 The Lord is gracious and merciful, not easily angered, and full of trustworthy love. 9 The Lord is good to everyone, and he shows mercy to all his created beings. 10 All the created beings will thank you, Lord, and all who faithfully follow you will praise you. 11 They will praise the glory of your kingdom, and talk about your power. 12 They will explain to people your wonderful miracles, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom never ends, and your rule continues for all generations. What the Lord promises can always be trusted; he is merciful in all he does. 14 The Lord helps up all those who fall down; he lifts up all those who are bowed down. 15 All eyes are on you, waiting in hope, and you give food at just the right time. 16 You give generously and satisfy the needs of every living thing. 17 The Lord does right in everything—his actions are always trustworthy. 18 The Lord is close to all who ask for his help, to all who ask in sincerity. 19 He satisfies the needs of those who follow him. He hears their cries for help and he saves them. 20 The Lord takes care of all those who love him, but he will destroy all those who are wicked. 21 I will speak in praise of the Lord, and may everyone honor his holy character, forever and ever.

  1. Comentario Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXLIV)

The title of this Psalm is brief in number of words, but heavy in the weight of its mysteries. "To David himself against Goliath." This battle was fought in the time of our fathers, and ye, beloved, remember it with me from Holy Scripture....David put five stones in his scrip, he hurled but one.

  2. Cita 145:3 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book I)

Great art Thou, O Lord, and greatly to be praised; great is Thy power, and of Thy wisdom there is no end. And man, being a part of Thy creation, desires to praise Thee, man, who bears about with him his mortality, the witness of his sin, even the witness that Thou "resistest the proud," --yet man, this part of …

  3. Cita 145:16 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXI)

Of this lesson David also lays the foundation from old time, saying enigmatically on this wise, "Thou openest Thine hand, and fillest every living thing with bounty;" and again, "To Him that giveth to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that call upon Him." "Who then," it may be said, "have not taken thought"?

  4. Cita 145:15 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapter V)

Wherefore to Him all things are turned, looking with irresistible longing and unspeakable affection to "the author" and maintainer "of" their "life," as it is written "The eyes of all wait upon thee," and again, "These wait all upon thee," and "Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing."

  5. Cita 145:15 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book VI, Chapters X–XI)

So were there three begging mouths, sighing out their wants one to the other, and waiting upon Thee, that Thou mightest give them their meat in due season. And in all the bitterness which by Thy mercy followed our worldly pursuits, as we contemplated the end, why this suffering should be ours, darkness came upon us; and we turned away …
