1 In that tyme went Iesus on the Sabot dayes thorow the corne and his disciples were anhogred and begane to plucke the eares of coorne and to eate.
1 At that time, Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the grain fields. His disciples were hungry and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.
2 When the pharises sawe that they sayde vnto him: Beholde thy disciples do that which is not lawfull to do apon the saboth daye.
2 But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said to him, “Behold, your disciples do what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.”
3 He sayde vnto the: Haue ye not reed what David did when he was anhougered and they also which were with him?
3 But he said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him:
3 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τί ἐποίησε Δαυῒδ ὅτε ἐπείνασεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ;
4 How he entred into the housse of God and ate the halowed loves which were not lawfull for him to eate nether for the which were with him but only for the prestes.
4 how he entered into God’s house and ate the show bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?
4 πῶς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔφαγεν, οὓς οὐκ ἐξὸν ἦν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν οὐδὲ τοῖς μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ, εἰ μὴ μόνοις τοῖς ἱερεῦσι;
5 Or have ye not reed in the lawe how that the prestes in the temple breake the saboth daye and yet are blamlesse?
5 Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath day the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless?
5 ἢ οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ἐν τῷ νόμῳ ὅτι τοῖς σάββασιν οἱ ἱερεῖς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ τὸ σάββατον βεβηλοῦσι, καὶ ἀναίτιοί εἰσι;
6 But I saye vnto you: that here is one greater then the temple.
6 But I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.
7 Wherfore yf ye had wist what this sayinge meneth: I require mercy and not sacrifice: ye wold never have condemned innocetes.
7 But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you wouldn’t have condemned the guiltless.
8 For the sonne of man is lord even of the saboth daye.
8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
9 And he departed thence and went into their synagoge:
9 He departed from there and went into their synagogue.
10 and beholde ther was a man whiche had his hande dryed vp. And they axed him sayinge: ys it lawfull to heale apon the saboth dayes? because they myght acuse him.
10 And behold, there was a man with a withered hand. They asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath day?” so that they might accuse him.
11 And he sayde vnto the: whiche of you wolde it be yf he had a shepe fallen into a pitte on the saboth daye that wolde not take him and lyft him out?
11 He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if this one falls into a pit on the Sabbath day, won’t he grab on to it and lift it out?
11 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· τίς ἔσται ἐξ ὑμῶν ἄνθρωπος ὃς ἕξει πρόβατον ἕν, καὶ ἐὰν ἐμπέσῃ τοῦτο τοῖς σάββασιν εἰς βόθυνον, οὐχὶ κρατήσει αὐτὸ καὶ ἐγερεῖ;
12 And how moche is a man better the a shepe? Wherfore it is lefull to do a good dede on the saboth dayes.
12 Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath day.”
13 Then sayde he to the man: stretch forth thy had. And he stretched it forthe. And it was made whole agayne lyke vnto the other.
13 Then he told the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out; and it was restored whole, just like the other.
14 Then the Pharyses wet out and helde a consell agaynst hym how they myght destroye hym.
14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how they might destroy him.
15 When Iesus knewe that he departed thece and moche people folowed him and he healed the all
15 Jesus, perceiving that, withdrew from there. Great multitudes followed him; and he healed them all,
16 and charged the that they shuld not make him knowe:
16 and commanded them that they should not make him known,
17 to fulfyll that which was spoden by Esay the Prophet which sayeth.
17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,
18 Beholde my chylde who I have chosen my beloved in who my soule deliteth. I wyll put my sprete on hym and he shall shewe iudgement to the gentyls.
18 “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit on him. He will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He shall not stryve he shall not crye nether shall eny man heare his voyce in the streetes
19 He will not strive, nor shout, neither will anyone hear his voice in the streets.
20 a brosed rede shall he not breacke and flaxe that begynneth to burne he shall not queche tyll he sende forth iudgement vnto victory
20 He won’t break a bruised reed. He won’t quench a smoking flax, until he leads justice to victory.
21 and in hys name shall the gentyls truste.
21 In his name, the nations will hope.”
22 Then was brought to hym one possessed with a devyll which was both blynde and domme: and he healed hym insomoch that he which was blynd and domme both spake and sawe.
22 Then one possessed by a demon, blind and mute, was brought to him; and he healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw.
23 And all the people were amased and sayde: Ys not this that sonne of David?
23 All the multitudes were amazed, and said, “Can this be the son of David?”
23 καὶ ἐξίσταντο πάντες οἱ ὄχλοι καὶ ἔλεγον· μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς Δαυΐδ;
24 But when the Pharises hearde that they sayde: This felow dryveth the devyls no nother wyse oute but by the helpe of Belzebub the chefe of the devyls.
24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “This man does not cast out demons except by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons.”
25 But Iesus knewe their thoughtes and sayde to the. Every kingdome devided with in it sylfe shalbe brought to naught. Nether shall eny cite or housholde devyded agest it sylfe contynue.
25 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.
26 So if satan cast out satan the is he devyded agenst him sylfe. How shall then his kyngdome endure?
26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?
26 καὶ εἰ ὁ σατανᾶς τὸν σατανᾶν ἐκβάλλει, ἐφ᾽ ἑαυτὸν ἐμερίσθη· πῶς οὖν σταθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ;
27 Also if I by the helpe of Belzebub cast oute devyls: by whose helpe do youre chyldren cast them out? Therfore they shalbe youre iudges.
27 If I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
28 But if I cast out the devyls by the sprite of God: then is the kyngdome of god come on you?
28 But if I by the Spirit of God cast out demons, then God’s Kingdom has come upon you.
29 Ether how can a man enter into a stroge mannes housse and violently take awaye his goodes: excepte he fyrst binde the stroge man and the spoyle his housse?
29 Or how can one enter into the house of the strong man and plunder his goods, unless he first bind the strong man? Then he will plunder his house.
30 He that is not with me is agaynst me. And he that gaddereth not with me scattereth abrode.
30 “He who is not with me is against me, and he who doesn’t gather with me, scatters.
31 Wherfore I say vnto you all maner of synne and blasphemy shalbe forgeven vnto men: but the blasphemy of the sprite shall not be forgeven vnto men.
31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a worde agaynst the sonne of man it shalbe forgeven him. But whosoever speaketh agaynst the holy goost it shall not be forgeven hym: no nether in this worlde nether in the worlde to come.
32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in that which is to come.
33 Ether make the tree good and his frute good also: or els make the tree evyll and his frute evyll also. For the tree is knowe by his frute.
33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree corrupt and its fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by its fruit.
34 O generacion of viperes how can ye saye well when ye youre selves are evyll? For of the aboundance of the hert the mouthe speaketh.
34 You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.
35 A good man oute of the good treasure of his hert bringeth forth good thynges. And an evyll man out of his evyll treasure bringeth forth evyll thinges.
35 The good man out of his good treasure brings out good things, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings out evil things.
36 But I say vnto you that of every ydell worde that men shall have spoken: they shall geve acountes at the daye of iudgement.
36 I tell you that every idle word that men speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy wordes thou shalt be iustifyed: and by thy wordes thou shalt be condemned.
37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
38 Then answered certeyne of the scribes and of the Pharises sayinge: Master we wolde fayne se a sygne of the.
38 Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39 He answered and sayde to the: The evyll and advoutrous generacion seketh a signe but ther shall no signe be geve to the saue the signe of the Prophete Ionas.
39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet.
40 For as Ionas was thre dayes and thre nyghtes in the whales belly: soo shall the sonne of man be thre dayes and thre nyghtes in the hert of the erth.
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the huge fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
41 The men of Ninivie shall rise at the daye of iugdement with this nacion and condemne them: for they amended at the preachinge of Ionas. And beholde a greater then Ionas is here.
41 The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, someone greater than Jonah is here.
42 The quene of the south shall ryse at the daye of iudgement with this generacion and shall condemne the: for she came from the vtmost parties of the worlde to heare the wysdome of Salomon. And beholde a greater then Salomon is here.
42 The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and will condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, someone greater than Solomon is here.
43 When the vnclene sprite is gone out of a man he walketh throughout dry places seking reest and fyndeth none.
43 “When an unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest, and doesn’t find it.
44 Then he sayeth: I will retourne ageyne into my housse from whence I came oute. And when he is come he fyndeth the housse empty and swepte and garnisshed.
44 Then he says, ‘I will return into my house from which I came;’ and when he has come back, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.
45 Then he goeth his waye and taketh vnto him seven other spretes worsse then himsilfe and so entre they in and dwell there. And the ende of that man is worsse then the beginning. Even so shall it be with this evell nacion.
45 Then he goes and takes with himself seven other spirits more evil than he is, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first. Even so will it be also to this evil generation.”
46 Whill he yet talked to the people: beholde his mother and his brethren stode without desyringe to speake with him.
46 While he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, seeking to speak to him.
47 Then one sayde vnto hym: beholde thy mother and thy brethren stonde without desiringe to speke with the.
47 One said to him, “Behold, your mother and your brothers stand outside, seeking to speak to you.”
48 He answered and sayd to him that tolde hym: Who is my mother? or who are my brethren?
48 But he answered him who spoke to him, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
48 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε τῷ λέγοντι αὐτῷ· τίς ἐστιν ἡ μήτηρ μου καὶ τίνες εἰσὶν οἱ ἀδελφοί μου;
49 And he stretched forth his hond over his disciples and sayd: behold my mother and my brethren.
49 He stretched out his hand toward his disciples, and said, “Behold, my mother and my brothers!
50 For whosoever dothe my fathers will which is in heven the same is my brother suster and mother.
50 For whoever does the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

  1. Comentario 12:32 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXI)

  2. Comentario 12:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXIX)

But Luke saith, "On a double Sabbath." Now what is a double Sabbath? When the cessation from toil is twofold, both that of the regular Sabbath, and that of another feast coming upon it. For they call every cessation from toil, a sabbath.

  3. Cita 12:43 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters XVI–XVII)

For when the unclean spirit of folly has gone forth, and when afterwards he finds them not waiting upon God, but occupied with mere worldly questions, then, "taking seven other spirits more wicked than himself," and inflating the minds of these men with the notion of their being able to conceive of something beyond God, and having fitly prepared them …

  4. Cita 12:41 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 3–5)

The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the utter most parts of the earth to hear the words of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here." Two things we learn from this passage, that a judgment is to take place, and that it …

  5. Cita 12:25 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily I)

Whereas, if they were in discord, neither could this have been pointed out, and the doctrine itself had long since been brought to nought: "for every kingdom," saith He, "divided against itself shall not stand." But now even in this shines forth the might of the Spirit, namely, in that it prevailed on these men, engaged as they were in …
