1 What shall we saye then that Abraham oure father as pertayninge to the flesshe dyd finde?
1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?
2 If Abraham were iustified by dedes the hath he wherin to reioyce: but not with god.
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.
3 For what sayth the scripture? Abraham beleved god and it was counted vnto him for rightewesnes.
3 Porque ¿qué dice la Escritura? Y creyó Abraham á Dios, y le fué atribuído á justicia.
3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
4 To him that worketh is the rewarde not reckened of favour: but of duty.
4 Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.
5 To him that worketh not but beleveth on him that iustifieth the vngodly is his fayth counted for rightewesnes.
5 But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
6 Even as David describeth the blessedfulnes of the man vnto whom god ascribeth rightewesnes without dedes.
6 Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
7 Blessed are they whose vnrightewesnes are forgeven and whose synnes are covered.
7 [Diciendo]: Bienaventurados aquellos cuyas iniquidades son perdonadas, y cuyos pecados son cubiertos.
7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is that man to whom the Lorde imputeth not synne.
8 Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”
9 Came this blessednes then vpon the circumcised or vpon the vncircumcised? We saye verely how that fayth was rekened to Abraham for rightewesnes.
9 Is this blessing then pronounced only on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.
10 How was it rekened? in the tyme of circumcision? or in the tyme before he was circumcised? Not in tyme of circucision: but when he was yet vncircumcised.
10 How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 And he receaved the signe of circumcision as a seale of that rightewesnes which is by fayth which fayth he had yet beynge vncircumcised: that he shuld be the father of all them that beleve though they be not circumcised that rightewesnes myght be imputed to them also:
11 Y recibió la circuncisión por señal, por sello de la justicia de la fe que tuvo en la incircuncisión: para que fuese padre de todos los creyentes no circuncidados, para que también á ellos les sea contado por justicia;
11 He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.
12 and that he myght be the father of the circumcised not because they are circumcised only: but because they walke also in the steppes of that fayth that was in oure father Abraham before the tyme of circumcision.
12 He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.
13 For the promes that he shuld be the heyre of the worlde was not geven to Abraham or to his seed thorow the lawe: but thorow the rightewesnes which cometh of fayth.
13 For the promise to Abraham and to his offspring that he would be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 For yf they which are of the lawe be heyres then is fayth but vayne and the promes of none effecte.
14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.
15 Because the lawe causeth wrathe. For where no lawe is there is no trasgression.
15 For the law produces wrath; for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.
16 Therfore by fayth is the inheritaunce geven that it myght come of faveour: and the promes myght be sure to all the seed. Not to them only which are of the lawe: but also to them which are of the fayth of Abraham which is the father of vs all.
16 For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the offspring, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.
17 As it is wrytten: I have made the a father to many nacions even before god whom thou hast beleved which quyckeneth the deed and called those thinges which be not as though they were.
17 As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.
18 Which Abraham contrary to hope beleved in hope that he shuld be the father of many nacions accordynge to that which was spoken: So shall thy seed be.
18 Against hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your offspring be.”
19 And he faynted not in the fayth nor yet consydered hys awne body which was now deed even when he was almost an hondred yeare olde: nether yet that Sara was past chyldeberinge.
19 Y no se enflaqueció en la fe, ni consideró su cuerpo ya muerto (siendo ya de casi cien años), ni la matriz muerta de Sara;
19 Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
20 He stackered not at the promes of God thorow vnbelefe: but was made stronge in the fayth and gave honour to God
20 Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,
21 full certifyed that what he had promised that he was able to make good.
21 and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was also able to perform.
22 And therfore was it reckened to him for rightewesnes.
22 Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”
23 It is not written for him only that it was reckened to him for rightewesnes:
23 Y no solamente por él fué escrito que le haya sido imputado;
23 Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone,
24 but also for vs to whom it shalbe counted for rightewesnes so we beleve on him that raysed vp Iesus oure Lorde from deeth.
24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
25 Which was delivered for oure synnes and rose agayne forto iustifie vs.
25 who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.

  3. Cita 4:3 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Preface)

  4. Cita 4:3 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVI, Chapters 22–24)

Here, indeed, is set down that sentence which the apostle quotes in order to commend the grace of God, "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness;" lest the circumcision should glory, and be unwilling to receive the uncircumcised nations to the faith of Christ.

  5. Cita 4:19 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture V)

God promises the old man a child, and Abraham without being weakened in faith, though he considered his own body now as good as dead, heeded not the weakness of his body, but the power of Him who promised, because he counted Him faithful who had promised, and so beyond all expectation gained the child from bodies as it …
