PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
14 Diciendo: De cierto te bendeciré bendiciendo, y multiplicando te multiplicaré.
17 Por lo cual, queriendo Dios mostrar más abundantemente á los herederos de la promesa la inmutabilidad de su consejo, interpuso juramento;
19 La cual tenemos como segura y firme ancla del alma, y que entra hasta dentro del velo;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 6:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Hebrews (Homily IX)

You have heard how much Paul found fault with the Hebrews for wishing to be always learning about the same things. And with good reason: "For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need again that some one teach you the elements of the first principles of the oracles of God." ( c. v.

… us have regard to the completion; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of the baptismal font, and of the laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment." This is the copious supply of milk, without which even they cannot live, who have …

  3. Quotes verse 6:4 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book IV, Chapter IX)

For it is impossible, he saith, for those who were once enlightened, &c., to renew them again unto repentance: seeing they crucify to themselves the Christ afresh, and put Him to an open shame.

  4. Quotes verse 6:13 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XCIV)
