1 Od Petra, apostola Isusa Hrista, izbranim došljacima, rasejanim po Pontu, Galatiji, Kapadokiji, Aziji i Vitaniji;
5 koje je sila Božija verom sačuvala za spasenje, pripravljeno da se javi u poslednje vreme;
7 da se kušanje vaše vere mnogo vrednije od zlata propadljivog koje se kuša ognjem nađe na hvalu i čast i slavu, kad se pokaže Isus Hristos;
8 kog ne videvši ljubite i kog sad ne gledajući no verujući Ga radujete se radošću neiskazanom i proslavljenom.
8 Al cual, no habiendo visto, le amáis; en el cual creyendo, aunque al presente no lo veáis, os alegráis con gozo inefable y glorificado;
10 Koje spasenje tražiše i ispitivaše za nj proroci, koji za vašu blagodat prorekoše;
11 ispitujući u kakvo ili u koje vreme javljaše Duh Hristov u njima, napred svedočeći za Hristove muke i za slave po tome;
14 Como hijos obedientes, no conformándoos con los deseos que antes teníais estando en vuestra ignorancia;
16 Jer je pisano: Budite sveti, jer sam ja svet.
18 znajući da se propadljivim srebrom ili zlatom ne iskupiste iz sujetnog svog življenja, koje ste videli od otaca;
18 Sabiendo que habéis sido rescatados de vuestra vana conversación, la cual recibisteis de vuestros padres, no con cosas corruptibles, [como] oro ó plata;
19 nego skupocenom krvlju Hrista, kao bezazlenog i prečistog jagnjeta;
24 Jer je svako telo kao trava, i svaka slava čovečija kao cvet travni: osuši se trava, i cvet njen otpade;
24 Porque Toda carne es como la hierba, y toda la gloria del hombre como la flor de la hierba: secóse la hierba, y la flor se cayó;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 1:8 Polycarp of Smyrna, Epistle to the Philippians (The Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians)

    … Lord Jesus Christ, who for our sins suffered even unto death, [but] "whom God raised from the dead, having loosed the bands of the grave." "In whom, though now ye see Him not, ye believe, and believing, rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory;" into which joy many desire to enter, knowing that "by grace ye are saved, not …

  2. Quotes verse 1:12 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapter XV)

    Admirable sophists, and explorers of the sublimities of the unknown Father, and rehearsers of those super-celestial mysteries "which the angels desire to look into!" --that they may learn that from the Nous of that Father who is above all, the Word was produced blind, that is, ignorant of the Father who produced him!

  3. Quotes verse 1:24 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXXII)

    … God destroy." "Let no man deceive himself." But perhaps a man will say, "My soul is the temple of God, not my body," and will add this testimony also, "All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass." Unhappy interpretation!

  4. Quotes verse 1:17 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture VII)

    For if we call on Him as Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, let us pass the time of our sojourning here in fear, loving not the world, neither the things that are in the world: for if any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  5. Quotes verse 1:21 Polycarp of Smyrna, Epistle to the Philippians (The Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians)

    "Wherefore, girding up your loins," "serve the Lord in fear" and truth, as those who have forsaken the vain, empty talk and error of the multitude, and "believed in Him who raised up our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead, and gave Him glory," and a throne at His right hand.
