2 I zatvoriše se izvori bezdanu i ustave nebeske, i dažd s neba prestade.
3 I stade voda opadati na zemlji, i jednako opadaše posle sto pedeset dana;
6 A posle četrdeset dana otvori Noje prozor na kovčegu, koji beše načinio;
8 Envió también de sí á la paloma, para ver si las aguas se habían retirado de sobre la faz de la tierra;
13 Šest stotina prve godine veka Nojevog prvi dan prvog meseca usahnu voda na zemlji; i Noje otkri krov na kovčegu, i ugleda zemlju suvu.
14 A drugog meseca dvadeset sedmog dana beše sva zemlja suva.
16 Izađi iz kovčega ti i žena tvoja i sinovi tvoji i žene sinova tvojih s tobom;
18 I iziđe Noje i sinovi njegovi i žena njegova i žene sinova njegovih s njim.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 8:4 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XV, Chapters 13–14)

    And the waters decreased continually until the eleventh month: on the first day of the month were the tops of the mountains seen." But if the months were such as we have, then so were the years.

  2. Quotes verse 8:7 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily V)

    For so with respect to the ark likewise, it is said, "The raven returned not till the earth was dried up." And yet it did not return even after that time.

  4. Quotes verse 8:8–11 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter I — 32, 33)

    When, then, it was sent forth, it brought an olive branch; but it had not leaves alone, it had also fruit. This, then, we ought to wish for our brethren who are baptized outside, that they may have fruit; the dove will not permit them to remain outside, but bring them back to the ark.
