PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
3 I kad otidem i pripravim vam mesto, opet ću doći, i uzeću vas k sebi da i vi budete gde sam ja.
4 I kuda ja idem znate, i put znate.
5 Reče Mu Toma: Gospode! Ne znamo kuda ideš; i kako možemo put znati?
5 Λέγει αὐτῷ Θωμᾶς· Κύριε, οὐκ οἴδαμεν ποῦ ὑπάγεις· καὶ πῶς δυνάμεθα τὴν ὁδὸν εἰδέναι;
6 Isus mu reče: Ja sam put i istina i život; niko neće doći k Ocu do kroza me.
7 Kad biste mene znali onda biste znali i Oca mog; i odsele poznajete Ga, i videste Ga.
8 Reče Mu Filip: Gospode! Pokaži nam Oca i biće nam dosta.
9 Isus mu reče: Toliko sam vreme s vama i nisi me poznao, Filipe?
9 λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· τοσοῦτον χρόνον μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν εἰμι, καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωκάς με, Φίλιππε; ὁ ἑωρακὼς ἐμὲ ἑώρακε τὸν πατέρα· καὶ πῶς σὺ λέγεις, δεῖξον ἡμῖν τὸν πατέρα;
12 Zaista, zaista vam kažem: koji veruje mene, dela koja ja tvorim i on će tvoriti, i veća će od ovih tvoriti; jer ja idem k Ocu svom;
14 I ako šta zaištete u ime moje, ja ću učiniti.
15 Ako imate ljubav k meni, zapovesti moje držite.
16 I ja ću umoliti Oca, i daće vam drugog utešitelja da bude s vama vavek:
18 Neću vas ostaviti sirotne; doći ću k vama.
19 Još malo i svet mene više neće videti; a vi ćete me videti; jer ja živim, i vi ćete živeti.
20 U onaj ćete vi dan doznati da sam ja u Ocu svom, i vi u meni, i ja u vama.
22 I reče Mu Juda, ne Iskariotski: Gospode! Šta je to da ćeš se nama javiti a ne svetu?
22 Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰούδας, οὐχ ὁ Ἰσκαριώτης· Κύριε, καὶ τί γέγονεν ὅτι ἡμῖν μέλλεις ἐμφανίζειν σεαυτὸν καὶ οὐχὶ τῷ κόσμῳ;
23 Isus odgovori i reče mu: Ko ima ljubav k meni, držaće reč moju; i Otac moj imaće ljubav k njemu; i k njemu ćemo doći, i u njega ćemo se staniti.
25 Ovo vam kazah dok sam s vama.
26 A utešitelj, Duh Sveti, kog će Otac poslati u ime moje, On će vas naučiti svemu i napomenuće vam sve što vam rekoh.
28 Čuste da vam ja kazah: idem i doći ću k vama.
30 Već neću mnogo govoriti s vama; jer ide knez ovog sveta, i u meni nema ništa.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 14:6 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XCI)

    Amongst other things, when the Holy Gospel was being read, ye heard what the Lord Jesus said, "I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life." Truth and life doth every man desire; but not every man doth find the way.

  2. Commentary 14:4 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XIV — 4-6)

    We have now the opportunity, dearly, beloved, as far as we can, of understanding the earlier words of the Lord from the later, and His previous statements by those that follow, in what you have heard was His answer to the question of the Apostle Thomas.

  3. Commentary 14:8 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily LXXIV)

    The Prophet said to the Jews, "Thou hadst the countenance of a harlot, thou wert shameless towards all men." ( Jer. iii. 3, LXX.) Now it seems fitting to use this expression not only against that city, but against all who shamelessly set their faces against the truth.

  4. Quotes verse 14:6 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapter XV)

    … He might come under the apprehension of man's senses, and having in Himself these six and twenty-four letters), then, becoming acquainted with Him, they ceased from their ignorance, and passed from death unto life, this name serving as their guide to the Father of truth. For the Father of all had resolved to put an end to ignorance, and to …

  5. Quotes verse 14:6 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book VII, Chapters XVI–XIX)

    … strength sufficient to enjoy Thee; but I found it not until I embraced that "Mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus," "who is over all, God blessed for ever," calling unto me, and saying, "I am the way, the truth, and the life," and mingling that food which I was unable to receive with our flesh.
