PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 U to vreme, kad beše vrlo mnogo naroda i ne imahu šta jesti, dozva Isus učenike svoje i reče im:
1 In those days, when there was a very great multitude, and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to himself and said to them,
2 “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have stayed with me now three days and have nothing to eat.
3 If I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come a long way.”
4 I odgovoriše Mu učenici Njegovi: Otkuda ćemo uzeti hleba ovde u pustinji da ih nahranimo?
4 His disciples answered him, “From where could one satisfy these people with bread here in a deserted place?”
4 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ· πόθεν τούτους δυνήσεταί τις ὧδε χορτάσαι ἄρτων ἐπ᾽ ἐρημίας;
5 I zapita ih: Koliko imate hlebova? A oni kazaše: Sedam.
5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.”
6 I zapovedi narodu da posedaju po zemlji; i uzevši onih sedam hlebova i hvalu davši, prelomi, i dade učenicima svojim da razdadu; i razdadoše narodu.
6 He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves. Having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to serve, and they served the multitude.
7 I imahu malo ribica; i njih blagoslovivši reče da i njih razdadu.
7 They also had a few small fish. Having blessed them, he said to serve these also.
8 They ate and were filled. They took up seven baskets of broken pieces that were left over.
I otpusti ih.
9 Those who had eaten were about four thousand. Then he sent them away.
10 I odmah uđe u lađu s učenicima svojim, i dođe u okoline dalmanutske.
10 Immediately he entered into the boat with his disciples and came into the region of Dalmanutha.
11 The Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven and testing him.
12 I uzdahnuvši duhom svojim reče: Zašto rod ovaj znak traži? Zaista vam kažem: neće se dati rodu ovome znak.
12 He sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Most certainly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
13 I ostavivši ih uđe opet u lađu, i ode na one strane.
13 He left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side.
14 I zaboraviše učenici Njegovi uzeti hleba, i nemahu sa sobom u lađi do jedan hleb.
14 They forgot to take bread; and they didn’t have more than one loaf in the boat with them.
15 I zapovedaše im govoreći: Gledajte, čuvajte se kvasca farisejskog i kvasca Irodovog.
15 He warned them, saying, “Take heed: beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”
16 They reasoned with one another, saying, “It’s because we have no bread.”
17 I razumevši Isus reče im: Šta mislite što hleba nemate? Zar još ne osećate, niti razumete? Zar je još okamenjeno srce vaše?
17 Jesus, perceiving it, said to them, “Why do you reason that it’s because you have no bread? Don’t you perceive yet or understand? Is your heart still hardened?
17 καὶ γνοὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς· τί διαλογίζεσθε ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε; οὔπω νοεῖτε οὐδὲ συνίετε; ἔτι πεπωρωμένην ἔχετε τὴν καρδίαν ὑμῶν;
18 Oči imate i ne vidite? Uši imate i ne čujete? I ne pamtite li
18 Having eyes, don’t you see? Having ears, don’t you hear? Don’t you remember?
18 ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντες οὐ βλέπετε, καὶ ὦτα ἔχοντες οὐκ ἀκούετε; καὶ οὐ μνημονεύετε;
19 kad ja pet hlebova prelomih na pet hiljada, koliko kotarica punih komada nakupiste? Rekoše Mu: Dvanaest.
19 When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They told him, “Twelve.”
20 A kad sedam na četiri hiljade, koliko punih kotarica nakupiste komada? A oni rekoše: Sedam.
20 “When the seven loaves fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They told him, “Seven.”
21 I reče im: Kako ne razumete?
21 He asked them, “Don’t you understand yet?”
21 καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· οὔπω συνίετε;
22 He came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him.
23 He took hold of the blind man by the hand, and brought him out of the village. When he had spat on his eyes, and laid his hands on him, he asked him if he saw anything.
24 I pogledavši reče: Vidim ljude gde idu kao drva.
24 He looked up, and said, “I see men, but I see them like walking trees.”
25 I potom opet metnu mu ruke na oči, i reče mu da progleda: i isceli se, i vide sve lepo.
25 Then again he laid his hands on his eyes. He looked intently, and was restored, and saw everyone clearly.
26 I posla ga kući njegovoj govoreći: Ne ulazi u selo, niti kazuj kome u selu.
26 He sent him away to his house, saying, “Don’t enter into the village, nor tell anyone in the village.”
27 I izađe Isus i učenici Njegovi u sela Ćesarije Filipove; i putem pitaše učenike svoje govoreći im: Ko govore ljudi da sam ja?
27 Jesus went out, with his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that I am?”
27 Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰς κώμας Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου· καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐπηρώτα τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγων αὐτοῖς· τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι;
28 A oni odgovoriše: Jovan krstitelj; drugi: Ilija; a drugi: Koji od proroka.
28 They told him, “John the Baptizer, and others say Elijah, but others, one of the prophets.”
29 A On im reče: A vi šta mislite ko sam ja? A Petar odgovarajući reče Mu: Ti si Hristos.
29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”
30 He commanded them that they should tell no one about him.
31 I poče ih učiti da Sinu čovečjem valja mnogo postradati, i da će Ga okriviti starešine i glavari sveštenički i književnici, i da će Ga ubiti, i treći dan da će ustati.
31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32 I govoraše o tom ne ustručavajući se. I Petar uze Ga i poče Ga odvraćati.
32 He spoke to them openly. Peter took him and began to rebuke him.
33 But he, turning around and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you have in mind not the things of God, but the things of men.”
34 He called the multitude to himself with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 Jer ko hoće dušu svoju da sačuva, izgubiće je; a ko izgubi dušu svoju mene radi i jevanđelja onaj će je sačuvati.
35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever will lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it.
36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
36 τί γὰρ ὠφελήσει ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν κερδήσῃ τὸν κόσμον ὅλον, καὶ ζημιωθῇ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ;
37 For what will a man give in exchange for his life?
37 ἢ τί δώσει ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ;
38 Jer ko se postidi mene i mojih reči u rodu ovom preljubotvornom i grešnom, i Sin će se čovečji postideti njega kad dođe u slavi Oca svog s anđelima svetima.
38 For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 8:5 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XLV)

    In expounding to you the Holy Scriptures, I as it were break bread for you. Do ye in hunger receive it, and break forth with a fulness of phrase from the heart; and ye who are rich in your banquet, be not meagre in good works and deeds. What I deal out to you is not mine own.

  2. Quotes verse 8:31 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XVI)

    … for the remission of sins be preached in His name among all nations." Now this is He who was born of Mary; for He says: "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected, and crucified, and on the third day rise again." The Gospel, therefore, knew no other son of man but Him who was of Mary, …

  3. Quotes verse 8:34 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XLVI)

    Hard and grievous does that appear which the Lord hath enjoined, that "whosoever will come after Him, must deny himself." But what He enjoineth is not hard or grievous, who aideth us that what He enjoineth may be done.

  4. Quotes verse 8:12 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LII)

    But Mark saith, that when they were come unto Him, and were questioning with Him, "He sighed deeply in His spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign?" And yet surely their inquiry was deserving of anger and great displeasure; yet nevertheless the benevolent and provident One is not angry, but pities and bewails them as incurably …

  5. Quotes verse 8:38 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapter VI)

    We ask them to listen to the Lord Himself, distinctly setting forth the equal dignity of His glory with the Father, in His words, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father;" and again, "When the Son cometh in the glory of his Father;" that they "should honour the Son even as they honour the Father;" and, "We beheld …
