PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 Tada pristupiše k Isusu književnici i fariseji od Jerusalima govoreći:
1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,
2 Zašto učenici tvoji prestupaju običaje starih? Jer ne umivaju ruke svoje kad hleb jedu.
2 “Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.”
3 A On odgovarajući reče im: Zašto i vi prestupate zapovest Božju za običaje svoje?
3 He answered them, “Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?
3 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· διατί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν;
4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’
5 A vi kažete: Ako koji reče ocu ili materi: Prilog je čim bi ti ja mogao pomoći;
5 But you say, ‘Whoever may tell his father or his mother, “Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,”
6 he shall not honor his father or mother.’ You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition.
7 Licemeri! Dobro je za vas prorokovao Isaija govoreći:
7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,
8 ‘These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9 No zaludu me poštuju učeći naukama i zapovestima ljudskim.
9 And they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrine rules made by men.’”
10 I dozvavši ljude, reče im: Slušajte i razumite.
10 He summoned the multitude, and said to them, “Hear, and understand.
11 That which enters into the mouth doesn’t defile the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
12 Tada pristupiše učenici Njegovi i rekoše Mu: Znaš li da fariseji čuvši tu reč sablazniše se?
12 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”
12 τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἶπον αὐτῷ· οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον;
13 A On odgovarajući reče: Svako drvo koje nije usadio Otac moj nebeski, iskoreniće se.
13 But he answered, “Every plant which my heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted.
14 Ostavite ih: oni su slepe vođe slepcima; a slepac slepca ako vodi, oba će u jamu pasti.
14 Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
15 A Petar odgovarajući reče Mu: Kaži nam priču ovu.
15 Peter answered him, “Explain the parable to us.”
16 A Isus reče: Eda li ste i vi još nerazumni?
16 So Jesus said, “Do you also still not understand?
16 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε;
17 Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly and then out of the body?
17 οὔπω νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται;
18 A šta izlazi iz usta iz srca izlazi, i ono pogani čoveka.
18 But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man.
19 Jer od srca izlaze zle misli, ubistva, preljube, kurvarstva, krađe, lažna svedočanstva, hule na Boga.
19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.
20 These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn’t defile the man.”
21 I izišavši odande Isus otide u krajeve tirske i sidonske.
21 Jesus went out from there and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon.
22 I gle, žena Hananejka izađe iz onih krajeva, i povika k Njemu govoreći: Pomiluj me Gospode sine Davidov! Moju kćer vrlo muči đavo.
22 Behold, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders and cried, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon!”
23 A On joj ne odgovori ni reči.
23 But he answered her not a word. His disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away; for she cries after us.”
24 A On odgovarajući reče: Ja sam poslan samo k izgubljenim ovcama doma Izrailjevog.
24 But he answered, “I wasn’t sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
25 A ona pristupivši pokloni Mu se govoreći: Gospode pomozi mi!
25 But she came and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
26 A On odgovarajući reče: Nije dobro uzeti od dece hleb i baciti psima.
26 But he answered, “It is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
27 But she said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
28 Tada odgovori Isus, i reče joj: O ženo! Velika je vera tvoja; neka ti bude kako hoćeš. I ozdravi kći njena od onog časa.
28 Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.
29 Jesus departed from there and came near to the sea of Galilee; and he went up on the mountain and sat there.
30 I pristupiše k Njemu ljudi mnogi koji imahu sa sobom hromih, slepih, nemih, uzetih i drugih mnogih, i položiše ih k nogama Isusovim, i isceli ih,
30 Great multitudes came to him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others, and they put them down at his feet. He healed them,
31 tako da se narod divljaše, videći neme gde govore, uzete zdrave, hrome gde idu, i slepe gde gledaju; i hvališe Boga Izrailjevog.
31 so that the multitude wondered when they saw the mute speaking, the injured healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing—and they glorified the God of Israel.
32 Jesus summoned his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have continued with me now three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away fasting, or they might faint on the way.”
33 The disciples said to him, “Where could we get so many loaves in a deserted place as to satisfy so great a multitude?”
33 καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ· πόθεν ἡμῖν ἐν ἐρημίᾳ ἄρτοι τοσοῦτοι ὥστε χορτάσαι ὄχλον τοσοῦτον;
34 I reče im Isus: Koliko hlebova imate? A oni rekoše: Sedam, i malo ribice.
34 Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”
35 I zapovedi narodu da posedaju po zemlji.
35 He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground;
36 I uzevši onih sedam hlebova i ribe, i davši hvalu, prelomi, i dade učenicima svojim, a učenici narodu.
36 and he took the seven loaves and the fish. He gave thanks and broke them, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.
37 I jedoše svi, i nasitiše se; i nakupiše komada što preteče sedam kotarica punih.
37 They all ate and were filled. They took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over.
38 Those who ate were four thousand men, in addition to women and children.
39 I otpustivši narod uđe u lađu, i dođe u okoline magdalske.
39 Then he sent away the multitudes, got into the boat, and came into the borders of Magdala.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 15:21 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXVII)

    This woman of Canaan, who has just now been brought before us in the lesson of the Gospel, shows us an example of humility, and the way of godliness; shows us how to rise from humility unto exaltation.

  2. Commentary 15:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LI)

    Then; when? when He had wrought His countless miracles; when He had healed the infirm by the touch of the hem of His garment. For even with this intent doth the evangelist mark the time, that He might signify their unspeakable wickedness, by nothing repressed.

  3. Quotes verse 15:8 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters XIV–XVIII)

    For [the Scripture] saith in a certain place, "This people honoureth Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me." And again: "They bless with their mouth, but curse with their heart." And again it saith, "They loved Him with their mouth, and lied to Him with their tongue; but their heart was not right with Him, neither …

    … the simple command of God; that is, they set up a spurious law, and one contrary to the [true] law; as also the Lord made plain, when He said to them, "Why do ye transgress the commandment of God, for the sake of your tradition?" For not only by actual transgression did they set the law of God at nought, …

  5. Quotes verse 15:24 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 27–29)

    For He says in the Gospel, "I am not sent save to the lost sheep of the house of Israel," which He here compared to the pupil of God's eye, to signify the profoundest love.
