PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 A kad siđe s gore, za Njim iđaše naroda mnogo.
1 When he came down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
2 I gle, čovek gubav dođe i klanjaše Mu se govoreći: Gospode! Ako hoćeš, možeš me očistiti.
2 Behold, a leper came to him and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean.”
3 I pruživši ruku Isus, dohvati ga se govoreći: Hoću, očisti se. I odmah očisti se od gube.
3 Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I want to. Be made clean.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
4 Jesus said to him, “See that you tell nobody; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
5 A kad uđe u Kapernaum, pristupi k Njemu kapetan moleći Ga
5 When he came into Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking him for help,
6 i govoreći: Gospode! Sluga moj leži doma uzet, i muči se vrlo.
6 saying, “Lord, my servant lies in the house paralyzed, grievously tormented.”
7 A Isus mu reče: Ja ću doći i isceliću ga.
7 Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
8 I kapetan odgovori i reče: Gospode! Nisam dostojan da pod krov moj uđeš; nego samo reci reč, i ozdraviće sluga moj.
8 The centurion answered, “Lord, I’m not worthy for you to come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
9 Jer i ja sam čovek pod vlasti, i imam pod sobom vojnike, pa kažem jednom: Idi, i ide; i drugom: Dođi, i dođe; i sluzi svom: Učini to, i učini.
9 For I am also a man under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and tell another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and tell my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard it, he marveled and said to those who followed, “Most certainly I tell you, I haven’t found so great a faith, not even in Israel.
11 I tell you that many will come from the east and the west, and will sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven,
12 but the children of the Kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
13 A kapetanu reče Isus: Idi, i kako si verovao neka ti bude. I ozdravi sluga njegov u taj čas.
13 Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way. Let it be done for you as you have believed.” His servant was healed in that hour.
14 I došavši Isus u dom Petrov vide taštu njegovu gde leži i groznica je trese.
14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother lying sick with a fever.
15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her. So she got up and served him.
16 A uveče dovedoše k Njemu besnih mnogo, i izgna duhove rečju, i sve bolesnike isceli:
16 When evening came, they brought to him many possessed with demons. He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,
17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying, “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.”
18 A kad vide Isus mnogo naroda oko sebe, zapovedi učenicima svojim da idu na one strane.
18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes around him, he gave the order to depart to the other side.
19 I pristupivši jedan književnik reče Mu: Učitelju! Ja idem za Tobom kud god Ti pođeš.
19 A scribe came and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20 Reče njemu Isus: Lisice imaju jame i ptice nebeske gnezda; a Sin čovečiji nema gde glave zakloniti.
20 Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
21 A drugi od učenika Njegovih reče Mu: Gospode!
21 Another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”
22 A Isus reče njemu: Hajde za mnom, a ostavi neka mrtvi ukopavaju svoje mrtvace.
22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
23 I kad uđe u lađu, za Njim uđoše učenici Njegovi.
23 When he got into a boat, his disciples followed him.
24 I gle, oluja velika postade na moru da se lađa pokri valovima; a On spavaše.
24 Behold, a violent storm came up on the sea, so much that the boat was covered with the waves; but he was asleep.
25 I prikučivši se učenici Njegovi probudiše Ga govoreći: Gospode! Izbavi nas, izgibosmo.
25 The disciples came to him and woke him up, saying, “Save us, Lord! We are dying!”
26 I reče im: Zašto ste strašljivi, maloverni? Tada ustavši zapreti vetrovima i moru, i postade tišina velika.
26 He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27 The men marveled, saying, “What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
27 οἱ δὲ ἄνθρωποι ἐθαύμασαν λέγοντες· ποταπός ἐστιν οὗτος, ὅτι καὶ οἱ ἄνεμοι καὶ ἡ θάλασσα ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ;
28 When he came to the other side, into the country of the Gergesenes, two people possessed by demons met him there, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that nobody could pass that way.
29 I gle, povikaše: Šta je Tebi do nas, Isuse, Sine Božji?
29 Behold, they cried out, saying, “What do we have to do with you, Jesus, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
29 καὶ ἰδοὺ ἔκραξαν λέγοντες· τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ; ἦλθες ὧδε πρὸ καιροῦ βασανίσαι ἡμᾶς;
30 A daleko od njih pasaše veliko krdo svinja.
30 Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding far away from them.
31 The demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of pigs.”
32 I reče im: Idite. I oni izišavši otidoše u svinje. I gle, navali svo krdo s brega u more, i potopiše se u vodi.
32 He said to them, “Go!” They came out and went into the herd of pigs; and behold, the whole herd of pigs rushed down the cliff into the sea and died in the water.
33 A svinjari pobegoše; i došavši u grad kazaše sve, i za besne.
33 Those who fed them fled and went away into the city and told everything, including what happened to those who were possessed with demons.
34 Behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged that he would depart from their borders.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 8:8 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XII)

We have heard, as the Gospel was being read, the praise of our faith as manifested in humility. For when the Lord Jesus promised that He would go to the Centurion's house to heal His servant, He answered, "I am not worthy that Thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and he shall be healed." By …

  2. Commentary 8:5 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXVI)

The leper came unto Him "when He was come down from the mountain," but this centurion, "when He was entered into Capernaum." Wherefore then did neither the one nor the other go up into the mountain? Not out of remissness, for indeed the faith of them both was fervent, but in order not to interrupt His teaching.

  3. Quotes verse 8:9 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapter VI)

They maintain that he is the centurion mentioned in the Gospel, who addressed the Saviour in these words: "For I also am one having soldiers and servants under my authority; and whatsoever I command they do." They further hold that he will continue administering the affairs of the world as long as that is fitting and needful, and specially that …

… of the gospel, by which the citizens of the heavenly city are delivered from divers errors and gathered together from divers wanderings, to whom his Lord has said, when anxious about the burial of his father, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead?" Regulus, in order not to break his oath, even with his most cruel enemies, returned …

  5. Quotes verse 8:8 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily III)

It was in this way that the centurion also said, "I am not fit that thou shouldest enter under my roof;" because of this, he became worthy, and was "marvelled at" above all Jews.
