PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 We begyn to prayse oure selves agayne. Nede we as some other of pistles of recommendacion vnto you? or letters of recommendacion from you?
1 Are we beginning again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as do some, letters of commendation to you or from you?
1 Ἀρχόμεθα πάλιν ἑαυτοὺς συνιστάνειν; εἰ μὴ χρῄζομεν ὥς τινες συστατικῶν ἐπιστολῶν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἢ ἐξ ὑμῶν συστατικῶν;
2 Ye are oure pistle written in oure hertes which is vnderstonde and reed of all men
2 You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men,
3 in that ye are knowen how that ye are the pistle of Christ ministred by vs and written not with ynke: but with the sprete of the livynge God not in tables of stone but in flesshly tables of the herte.
3 being revealed that you are a letter of Christ, served by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tablets of stone, but in tablets that are hearts of flesh.
4 Suche trust have we thorow Christ to god ward
4 Such confidence we have through Christ toward God,
5 not that we are sufficient of oure selves to thinke enythinge as it were of oure selves: but oure ablenes cometh of God
5 not that we are sufficient of ourselves to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God,
6 which hath made vs able to minister the newe testament not of the letter but of the sprete. For the letter kylleth but the sprete geveth lyfe.
6 who also made us sufficient as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
7 Yf the ministracion of deeth thorow the letters figured in stones was glorious so that the chyldren of Israel coulde not beholde the face of Moses for the glory of his countenauce (which glory neverthelesse is done awaye)
7 But if the service of death, written engraved on stones, came with glory, so that the children of Israel could not look steadfastly on the face of Moses for the glory of his face, which was passing away,
8 why shall not the ministracion of the sprete be moche more glorious?
8 won’t service of the Spirit be with much more glory?
8 πῶς οὐχὶ μᾶλλον ἡ διακονία τοῦ πνεύματος ἔσται ἐν δόξῃ;
9 For if the ministringe of condempnacion be glorious: moche more do the the ministracion of rightewesnes excede in glory.
9 For if the service of condemnation has glory, the service of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.
10 For no dout that which was there glorified is not once glorified in respecte of this excedynge glory.
10 For most certainly that which has been made glorious has not been made glorious in this respect, by reason of the glory that surpasses.
11 Then if that which is destroyed was glorious moche more shall that which remayneth be glorious.
11 For if that which passes away was with glory, much more that which remains is in glory.
12 Seynge then that we have soche trust we vse gret boldnes
12 Having therefore such a hope, we use great boldness of speech,
13 and do not as Moses which put a vayle over his face that the children of Israel shuld not se for what purpose that served which is put awaye.
13 and not as Moses, who put a veil on his face so that the children of Israel wouldn’t look steadfastly on the end of that which was passing away.
14 But their myndes were blinded. For untill this daye remayneth the same coveringe vntake awaye in the olde testament when they reade it which in Christ is put awaye.
14 But their minds were hardened, for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains, because in Christ it passes away.
15 But even vnto this daye when Moses is redde the vayle hangeth before their hertes.
15 But to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart.
16 Neverthelesse when they tourne to the Lorde the vayle shalbe taken awaye.
16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
17 The Lorde no dout is a sprete. And where the sprete of the Lorde is there is libertie.
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18 But we all beholde the glorye of the Lorde with his face open and are chaunged vnto the same similitude from glory to glory even of the sprite of the Lorde.
18 But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 3:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Second Corinthians (Homily VI)

He anticipates and puts himself an objection which others would have urged against him, Thou vauntest thyself;' and this though he had before employed so strong a corrective in the expressions, "Who is sufficient for these things?" and, "of sincerity...speak we." (2 Cor. ii. 16, 17.) Howbeit he is not satisfied with these. For such is his character.
