ULB Unlocked Literal Bible WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon) PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition) 1 After Jesus spoke these words, he went out with his disciples to the other side of the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden into which he and his disciples entered. 1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.
2 Now Judas, who was going to betray him, also knew the place, for Jesus often went there with his disciples. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
3 Then Judas, leading a group of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 3 Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Then Jesus, who knew all the things that were happening to him, went forward and asked them, “Who are you looking for?” 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
4 Ἰησοῦς οὖν εἰδὼς πάντα τὰ ἐρχόμενα ἐπ᾽ αὐτόν, ἐξελθὼν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· τίνα ζητεῖτε;
5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am.” Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with the soldiers. 5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 So when he said to them, “I am,” they went backward and fell to the ground. 6 When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward and fell to the ground.
7 Then again he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” Again they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 7 Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am. So if you are looking for me, let these go.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,”
9 This was in order to fulfill the word that he said: “Of those whom you have given me, I lost no one.” 9 that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.”
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Now the name of the servant was Malchus. 10 Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword back into its sheath. Should I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” 11 Jesus therefore said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?”
11 εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ· βάλε τὴν μάχαιραν εἰς τὴν θήκην· τὸ ποτήριον ὃ δέδωκέ μοι ὁ πατήρ, οὐ μὴ πίω αὐτό;
12 So the group of soldiers and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and tied him up. 12 So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him,
13 They led him first to Annas, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 13 and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had given the advice to the Jews that it would be better that one man die for the people. 14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.
15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest; 15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;
16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the female doorkeeper and he brought Peter in. 16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 Then the female servant, the doorkeeper, said to Peter, “Are you not also one of the disciples of this man?” He said, “I am not.” 17 Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.”
18 Now the servants and the officers were standing there, and they had made a charcoal fire, for it was cold, and they were warming themselves. Peter was also with them, standing there and warming himself. 18 Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 The high priest then asked Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I was always teaching in synagogues and in the temple where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 20 Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.
21 Why did you ask me? Ask those who have heard me about what I said. Look, these people know what I said.” 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, they know the things which I said.”
22 When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing there struck Jesus and said, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 22 When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?”
22 ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος εἷς τῶν ὑπηρετῶν παρεστηκὼς ἔδωκε ῥάπισμα τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰπών· οὕτως ἀποκρίνῃ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ;
23 Jesus answered him, “If I spoke wrongly, testify about the wrong, but if rightly, why do you hit me?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”
23 ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· εἰ κακῶς ἐλάλησα, μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ· εἰ δὲ καλῶς, τί με δέρεις;
24 Then Annas sent him tied up to Caiaphas the high priest. 24 Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. The people then said to him, “Are you not also one of his disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You aren’t also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
25 Ἦν δὲ Σίμων Πέτρος ἑστὼς καὶ θερμαινόμενος. εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ· μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ εἶ;
26 One of the servants of the high priest, who was a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
26 ἠρνήσατο οὖν ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν· οὐκ εἰμί. λέγει εἷς ἐκ τῶν δούλων τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, συγγενὴς ὢν οὗ ἀπέκοψε Πέτρος τὸ ὠτίον· οὐκ ἐγώ σε εἶδον ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ;
27 Peter then denied again, and immediately the rooster crowed. 27 Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the government headquarters. It was early in the morning, and they did not enter the government headquarters so that they would not be defiled but would eat the Passover. 28 They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
29 So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?” 29 Pilate therefore went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
29 ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Πιλᾶτος πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπε· τίνα κατηγορίαν φέρετε κατὰ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου;
30 They answered and said to him, “If this man was not an evildoer, we would not have given him over to you.” 30 They answered him, “If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”
31 Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.” 31 Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is illegal for us to put anyone to death,”
32 They said this so that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled which he had spoken to indicate by what kind of death he would die. 32 that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.
33 Then Pilate entered the government headquarters again and called Jesus and he said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 33 Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
33 Εἰσῆλθεν οὖν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον πάλιν ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἐφώνησε τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων;
34 Jesus answered, “Do you speak from yourself, or did others speak to you about me?” 34 Jesus answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?”
34 ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἀφ᾽ ἑαυτοῦ σὺ τοῦτο λέγεις ἢ ἄλλοι σοι εἶπον περὶ ἐμοῦ;
35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and the chief priests gave you over to me. What did you do?” 35 Pilate answered, “I’m not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?”
35 ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πιλᾶτος· μήτι ἐγὼ Ἰουδαῖός εἰμι; τὸ ἔθνος τὸ σὸν καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς παρέδωκάν σε ἐμοί· τί ἐποίησας;
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were part of this world, then my servants would fight so that I would not be given over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.” 36 Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate then said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this purpose I have come into the world, so that I would bear witness to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” 37 Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in this man. 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 But you have the custom that I release one person to you at the Passover. So do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?” 39 But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
39 ἔστι δὲ συνήθεια ὑμῖν ἵνα ἕνα ὑμῖν ἀπολύσω ἐν τῷ πάσχα· βούλεσθε οὖν ὑμῖν ἀπολύσω τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων;
40 Then they cried out again and said, “Not this man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber. 40 Then they all shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
