1 For the chief musician, set to the Shoshannim Eduth style. A psalm of Asaph. Pay attention, Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock; you who sit above the cherubim, shine on us! 2 In the sight of Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your power; come and save us. 3 God, restore us; make your face shine on us, and we will be saved. 4 Yahweh God of hosts, how long will you be angry at your people when they pray? 5 You have fed them with the bread of tears and given them tears to drink in great quantities. 6 You make us something for our neighbors to argue over, and our enemies laugh about us among themselves. 7 God of hosts, restore us; make your face shine on us, and we will be saved. 8 You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out nations and transplanted it. 9 You cleared the land for it; it took root and filled the land. 10 The mountains were covered with its shade, the cedars of God by its branches. 11 It sent out its branches as far as the sea and its shoots to the Euphrates River. 12 Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by along the road pluck its fruit? 13 The boars out of the forest ruin it, and the beasts of the field feed on it. 14 Turn back, God of hosts; look down from heaven and take notice and take care of this vine. 15 This is the root that your right hand planted, the shoot that you made to grow. 16 It has been burned and cut down; they perish because of your rebuke. 17 May your hand be on the man of your right hand, on the son of man whom you made strong for yourself. 18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name. 19 Yahweh God of hosts, restore us; make your face shine on us, and we will be saved.

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
"O God, the Gentiles have come into Thine inheritance" (ver. 1). Under which form of expression other things which were to come to pass, are spoken of as having been done. Nor must this be wondered at, that these words are being spoken to God.

As also David says, when entreating His manifestation, "Thou that sittest between the cherubim, shine forth." For the cherubim, too, were four-faced, and their faces were images of the dispensation of the Son of God.
"Turn us again, O Lord God of Hosts, cause Thy face to shine; and we shall be saved." For whithersoever the soul of man turns itself, unless towards Thee, it is affixed to sorrows, yea, though it is affixed to beauteous things without Thee and without itself.

For indeed the Scripture is ever wont to call the law a hedge; as the prophet saith: "Thou hast broken down her hedge, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck off her grapes:" and, "I have set a hedge about it:" and Paul, "Having broken down the middle wall of the hedge." But others say, that …

… the Lord and guided them." And pray do not again understand by this guidance some humble service, for the Word witnesses that it was the work of God;--"Thou leddest thy people," it is said "like a flock," and "Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock," and "He led them on safely, so that they feared not." Thus when you hear …
