Notes on this text (1)

1 For the chief musician. A psalm of David. May Yahweh help you in the day of trouble; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you 2 and send help from the holy place to support you from Zion. 3 May he call to mind all your offerings and accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah 4 May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans. 5 Then we will rejoice in your victory, and, in the name of our God, we will raise banners. May Yahweh grant all your petitions. 6 Now I know that Yahweh will rescue his anointed one; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the strength of his right hand that can rescue him. 7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses, but we call on Yahweh our God. 8 They will be brought down and fall, but we will rise and stand upright! 9 Yahweh, rescue the king; help us when we call.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XIX)

It is a well-known title; nor does the Lord Jesus Christ say what follows, but it is said of Him. 2. "The heavens tell out the glory of God" (ver. 1).
