Notes on this text (1)

1 For the chief musician; on a stringed instrument. A psalm of David. Hear my cry, God; attend to my prayer. 2 From the ends of the earth will I call to you when my heart is faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. 3 For you have been a refuge for me, a strong tower from the enemy. 4 Let me live in your tabernacle forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings. Selah 5 For you, God, have heard my vows, you have given me the inheritance of those who honor your name. 6 You will prolong the king's life; his years will be like many generations. 7 He will remain before God forever. 8 I will sing praise to your name forever so that I may perform my vows every day.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LX)

David the king was one man, but not one man he figured; sometimes to wit he figured the Church of many men consisting, extended even unto the ends of the earth: but sometimes One Man he figured, Him he figured that is Mediator of God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.
