Notes on this text (1)

1 Give thanks to Yahweh, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations. 2 Sing to him, sing praises to him; speak of all his marvelous deeds. 3 Boast in his holy name; let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice. 4 Seek Yahweh and his strength; seek his presence continually. 5 Recall the marvelous things he has done, his miracles and the decrees from his mouth, 6 you descendants of Abraham his servant, you people of Jacob, his chosen ones. 7 He is Yahweh, our God. His decrees are on all the earth. 8 He keeps in mind his covenant forever, the word that he commanded for a thousand generations. 9 He calls to mind the covenant that he made with Abraham and his oath to Isaac. 10 This is what he confirmed to Jacob as a statute and to Israel as an everlasting covenant. 11 He said, “I will give you the land of Canaan as your share of your inheritance.” 12 He said this when they were only few in number, so very few, and were strangers in the land. 13 They went from nation to nation and from one kingdom to another. 14 He did not allow anyone to oppress them; he rebuked kings for their sakes. 15 He said, “Do not touch my anointed ones, and do not harm my prophets.” 16 He called for a famine on the land; he cut off the whole supply of bread. 17 He sent a man ahead of them; Joseph was sold as a servant. 18 His feet were bound by shackles; on his neck was put an iron collar, 19 until what he had said came to pass. The word of Yahweh tested him. 20 The king sent servants to release him; the ruler of the people set him free. 21 He put him in charge of his house as ruler of all his possessions 22 to instruct his princes as he wished and to teach his elders wisdom. 23 Then Israel came into Egypt, and Jacob lived for a time in the land of Ham. 24 Yahweh made his people fruitful, and made them stronger than their enemies. 25 He caused their enemies to hate his people, to mistreat his servants. 26 He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. 27 They performed his signs among the Egyptians, his wonders in the land of Ham. 28 He sent darkness and made that land dark, but its people did not obey his commands. 29 He turned their water into blood and killed their fish. 30 Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the rooms of their rulers. 31 He spoke, and swarms of flies and gnats came throughout their country. 32 He turned their rain into hail, with fire flaming on their land. 33 He destroyed their vines and fig trees; he broke the trees of their country. 34 He spoke, and the locusts came, so many locusts. 35 The locusts ate up all of the vegetation in their land; They ate up all the crops of the ground. 36 He killed every firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their strength. 37 He brought the Israelites out with silver and gold; none of his tribes stumbled on the way. 38 Egypt was glad when they went away, for the Egyptians were afraid of them. 39 He spread a cloud for a covering and made a fire to light up the night. 40 The Israelites asked for food, and he brought quail and satisfied them with bread from heaven. 41 He split the rock, and waters gushed from it; they flowed in the wilderness like a river. 42 For he called to mind his holy promise that he made to Abraham his servant. 43 He led his people out with joy, his chosen with shouts of triumph. 44 He gave them the lands of the nations; they took possession of the wealth of the peoples 45 so that they might keep his statutes and obey his laws. Praise Yahweh.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CIV)

"Bless the Lord, O my soul." Let the soul of us all, made one in Christ, say this. "O Lord my God, Thou art magnified exceedingly!" (ver. 1). Where art Thou magnified? "Confession and beauty Thou hast put on." Confess ye, that ye may be beautified, that He may put you on. "Clothed with light as a garment" (ver. 2).

  2. Quotes verse 105:15 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapters 9–11)

… commit iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men; but my mercy will I not take away from him," meaning by stripes the strokes of correction. Hence that saying, "Touch ye not my christs." For what else is that than, Do not harm them?

  3. Quotes verse 105:15 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XXI)

Having therefore become partakers of Christ, ye are properly called Christs, and of you God said, Touch not My Christs, or anointed.

  4. Quotes verse 105:37 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapters XXV–XXVI)

This is the case where, as we have observed, it often stands instead of with; as for instance, "I will go into thy house in burnt offerings," instead of with burnt offerings and "he brought them forth also by silver and gold," that is to say with silver and gold and "thou goest not forth in our armies" instead of …

  5. Quotes verse 105:8 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 6–7)

And for the same reason we cannot better interpret the words of the psalm, "He hath been mindful of His covenant for ever, the word which He commanded to a thousand generations," than by understanding it to mean "to all generations." "And he cast him into the abyss,"--i.e., cast the devil into the abyss.
