Notes on this text (1)

1 A psalm. Oh, sing to Yahweh a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have given him victory. 2 Yahweh has made known his salvation; he has openly showed his justice to all the nations. 3 He calls to mind his covenant loyalty and faithfulness for the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth will see the victory of our God. 4 Shout for joy to Yahweh, all the earth; burst into song, sing for joy, and sing praises. 5 Sing praises to Yahweh with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn, make a joyful noise before the King, Yahweh. 7 Let the sea shout and everything in it, the world and those who live in it! 8 Let the rivers clap their hands, and let the mountains shout for joy. 9 Yahweh is coming to judge the earth; he will judge the world with righteousness and the nations with fairness.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XCVII)

This Psalm is entitled, "A Psalm of David's, when his land was restored." Let us refer the whole to Christ, if we wish to keep the road of a right understanding: let us not depart from the corner stone, lest our understanding suffer a fall: in Him let that become fixed, which wavered with unstable motion; let that rest upon …

… indeed, as follows: "I have waited for Thy salvation, O Lord." And then again, Saviour: "Behold my God, my Saviour, I will put my trust in Him." But as bringing salvation, thus: "God hath made known His salvation (salutare) in the sight of the heathen." For He is indeed Saviour, as being the Son and Word of God; but salutary, …
