1 For the end, for them that shall yet be changed; for an inscription by David for instruction,
·
2 when he [had] burned Mesopotamia of Syria, and Syria Zobah, and Joab [had] returned and smitten [in] the Valley of Salt twelve thousand.
·
3 O God, thou hast rejected and destroyed us; Thou hast been angry, yet hast pitied us.
60:1 For the Chief Musician. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A teaching poem by David, when he fought with Aram Naharaim and with Aram Zobah, and Joab returned, and killed twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt. God, you have rejected us. You have broken us down. You have been angry. Restore us, again.
4 Thou hast shaken the earth, and troubled it; Heal its breaches, for it has been shaken.
60:2 You have made the land tremble. You have torn it. Mend its fractures, for it quakes.
5 Thou hast shown thy people hard things: Thou hast made us drink the wine of astonishment.
60:3 You have shown your people hard things. You have made us drink the wine that makes us stagger.
6 Thou hast given a token to them that fear thee, That they might flee from the bow. Pause.
60:4 You have given a banner to those who fear you, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.
7 That thy beloved ones may be delivered; Save with thy right hand, and hear me.
60:5 So that your beloved may be delivered, save with your right hand, and answer us.
8 God has spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, and divide Shechem, And measure out the Valley of Tents.
60:6 God has spoken from his sanctuary: “I will triumph. I will divide Shechem, and measure out the valley of Succoth.
9 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; And Ephraim is the strength of my head;
60:7 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine. Ephraim also is the defense of my head. Judah is my scepter.
10 Judah is my king; Moab is the caldron of my hope; Over Edom will I stretch out my shoe; The Philistines have been subjected to me.
60:8 Moab is my wash basin. I will throw my sandal on Edom. I shout in triumph over Philistia.”
11 Who will lead me into the fortified city? Who will guide me as far as Edom?
60:9 Who will bring me into the strong city? Who has led me to Edom?
12 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? And wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our forces?
60:10 Haven’t you, God, rejected us? You don’t go out with our armies, God.
13 Give us help from trouble: For vain is the deliverance of man.
60:11 Give us help against the adversary, for the help of man is vain.
14 In God will we do valiantly; And he shall bring to nought them that harass us.
60:12 Through God we will do valiantly, for it is he who will tread down our adversaries.

  1. Comentario Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LIX)

As the Scripture is wont to set mysteries of the Psalms on the titles, and to deck the brow of a Psalm with the high announcement of a Mystery, in order that we that are about to go in may know (when as it were upon the door-post we have read what within is doing) either of whom the house …

  2. Cita 60:11 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXIV)

But first passeth away the tribulation of this life, out of which He giveth us help, to whom we have said, "Give us help from tribulation." And all this life is indeed a tribulation to the understanding.
