2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who organized a wedding celebration for his son,” Jesus explained. 2 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who made a wedding feast for his son,
3 “He sent out his servants to everyone who was invited to the wedding to tell them to come, but they refused. 3 and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come.
4 So he sent out more servants, with the instructions, ‘Tell those who are invited that I've prepared the wedding banquet. The bulls and fattened calves have been killed—everything's ready. So come to the wedding!’ 4 Again he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner. My cattle and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding feast!”’
5 But they ignored the invitation and left. One went to his fields; another to take care of his business. 5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise;
6 The rest grabbed the king's servants, mistreated them, and killed them. 6 and the rest grabbed his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.
7 The king became furious. He sent his soldiers to destroy those murderers and burn down their town. 7 When the king heard that, he was angry, and sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
8 Then the king said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those who were invited didn't deserve to attend. 8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren’t worthy.
9 Go into the streets and invite everyone you find to come to the wedding.’ 9 Go therefore to the intersections of the highways, and as many as you may find, invite to the wedding feast.’
10 So the servants went out into the streets and brought back everyone they could find, both the good and the bad. The wedding hall was full. 10 Those servants went out into the highways and gathered together as many as they found, both bad and good. The wedding was filled with guests.
11 But when the king came in to meet the guests, he noticed a man who didn't have a wedding robe on. 11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who didn’t have on wedding clothing,
12 He asked him, ‘My friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?’ The man had nothing to say. 12 and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here not wearing wedding clothing?’ He was speechless.
13 Then the king told his servants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and throw him out into the dark, where there'll be crying and grinding of teeth.’ 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.’
14 For many are invited, but few are chosen.” 14 For many are called, but few chosen.”
15 Then the Pharisees left and met together to plot how they could trap him by what he said. 15 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might entrap him in his talk.
16 They sent their disciples to him, together with some of Herod's supporters. “Teacher, we know you are a honest man, and that you teach God's way is the truth,” they began. “You don't allow yourself to be influenced by anyone, and you don't care about rank or status. 16 They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter whom you teach; for you aren’t partial to anyone.
17 So let us know your opinion. Is it right to pay Caesar's taxes, or not?” 17 Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
17 εἰπὲ οὖν ἡμῖν, τί σοι δοκεῖ; ἔξεστι δοῦναι κῆνσον Καίσαρι ἢ οὔ;
18 Jesus knew their motives were evil. He asked them, “Why are you trying to trap me, you hypocrites? 18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?
18 γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πονηρίαν αὐτῶν εἶπε· τί με πειράζετε, ὑποκριταί;
19 Show me the coin that is used to pay the tax.” They brought a denarius coin to him. 19 Show me the tax money.” They brought to him a denarius.
20 “Whose image and whose title is inscribed here?” he asked them. 20 He asked them, “Whose is this image and inscription?”
20 καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· τίνος ἡ εἰκὼν αὕτη καὶ ἡ ἐπιγραφή;
21 “Caesar's,” they replied. “You should give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God,” he told them. 21 They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
22 When they heard Jesus' answer they were stunned. They went away and left him. 22 When they heard it, they marveled, and left him and went away.
23 Later the same day some Sadducees came to see him. (They are the ones who say there's no resurrection.) 23 On that day Sadducees (those who say that there is no resurrection) came to him. They asked him,
24 They asked him, “Teacher, Moses said that if a married man dies without having children, his brother should marry his widow and have children on behalf of his brother. 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.’
25 Well, once there were seven brothers here with us. The first married, and died, and since he had no children he left his widow to his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother.
26 The same thing happened to the second and third husband, right up to the seventh. 26 In the same way, the second also, and the third, to the seventh.
27 In the end the woman died too. 27 After them all, the woman died.
28 So when the resurrection takes place, whose wife of the seven brothers will she be, for she married all of them?” 28 In the resurrection therefore, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had her.”
29 Jesus replied, “Your mistake is you don't know Scripture or what God can do. 29 But Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurrection people don't marry, and they aren't given in marriage either—they're like the angels in heaven. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like God’s angels in heaven.
31 As for the resurrection of the dead—haven't you read what God said to you, 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven’t you read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He's not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
33 When the crowds heard what he said, they were amazed at his teaching. 33 When the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
34 When the Pharisees heard that he'd left the Sadducees speechless, they got together and went to ask some more questions. 34 But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together.
35 One of them, who was a legal expert, asked him a question to try to trap him: 35 One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him.
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”
36 διδάσκαλε, ποία ἐντολὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ νόμῳ;
37 Jesus told them, “‘Love the Lord your God in all you think, in all you feel, and in all you do.’ 37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38 This is the greatest commandment, the first commandment. 38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 The second is just like it, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 39 A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 All biblical law and the writings of the prophets depend on these two commandments.” 40 The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
41 While the Pharisees were gathered there, Jesus asked them a question. 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,
42 “What do you think about the Messiah?” he asked. “Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. 42 saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “Of David.”
43 “But how can David under inspiration call him ‘Lord’?” Jesus asked them. “He says, 43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit down at my right hand until I defeat all your enemies.’ 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit on my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet’?
44 εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου, κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου;
45 If David called him Lord, how can he be his son?” 45 “If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”
45 εἰ οὖν Δαυῒδ καλεῖ αὐτὸν Κύριον, πῶς υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστι;
46 Nobody could answer him, and from then on nobody dared to ask him any more questions. 46 No one was able to answer him a word, neither did any man dare ask him any more questions from that day forward.
