1 TO THE OVERSEER. A PSALM OF DAVID. YHWH, You have searched me, and know.
1 Al Músico principal: Salmo de David. OH Jehová, tú me has examinado y conocido.
2 You have known my sitting down, || And my rising up, || You have attended to my thoughts from afar.
2 Tú has conocido mi sentarme y mi levantarme, has entendido desde lejos mis pensamientos.
3 You have fanned my path and my lying down, || And have been acquainted [with] all my ways.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, || Behold, O YHWH, You have known it all!
5 You have besieged me behind and before, || And You place Your hand on me.
5 Detrás y delante me guarneciste, y sobre mí pusiste tu mano.
6 Knowledge too wonderful for me, || It has been set on high, || I am not able for it.
7 To where do I go from Your Spirit? And to where do I flee from Your face?
7 ¿Adónde me iré de tu espíritu? ¿y adónde huiré de tu presencia?
8 If I ascend the heavens—You [are] there, || And spread out a bed in Sheol, behold, You!
9 I take the wings of morning, || I dwell in the uttermost part of the sea,
10 Also there Your hand leads me, || And Your right hand holds me.
10 Aun allí me guiará tu mano, y me asirá tu diestra.
11 And I say, “Surely darkness bruises me,” || Then night [is] light to me.
11 Si dijere: Ciertamente las tinieblas me encubrirán; aun la noche resplandecerá tocante á mí.
12 Also darkness does not hide from You, || And night shines as day, || As [is] darkness so [is] light.
13 For You have possessed my reins, || You cover me in my mother’s belly.
14 I confess You, because I have been fearfully distinguished. Your works [are] wonderful, || And my soul is knowing [it] well.
15 My substance was not hid from You, || When I was made in secret, || Curiously worked in the lower part of earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance, || And all of them are written on Your scroll, || The days they were formed—And not one among them.
17 And how precious Your thoughts have been to me, || O God, how great has been their sum!
18 I recount them! They are more than the sand, || I have awoken, and I am still with You.
19 Do You slay, O God, the wicked? Then, men of blood, turn aside from me!
20 Who exchange You for wickedness, || Your enemies [are] lifted up to vanity.
21 Do I not hate, YHWH, those hating You? And grieve myself with Your withstanders?
22 I have hated them [with] perfect hatred, || They have become enemies to me.
22 Aborrézcolos con perfecto odio; téngolos por enemigos.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart, || Try me, and know my thoughts,
23 Examíname, oh Dios, y conoce mi corazón: pruébame y reconoce mis pensamientos:
24 And see if a grievous way be in me, || And lead me in a perpetual way!

  1. Comentario Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXXVIII)

The title of this Psalm is brief and simple, and need not detain us; since we know whose resemblance David wore, and since in him we recognise ourselves also, for we too are members of that Body. The whole title is, "To David himself." Let us see then, what is to David himself.

  2. Cita 139:7–10 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters XXVI–XXXIII)

If I ascend into heaven, Thou art there; if I go away even to the uttermost parts of the earth, there is Thy right hand; if I make my bed in the abyss, there is Thy Spirit." Whither, then, shall any one go, or where shall he escape from Him who comprehends all things?

  3. Cita 139:7 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book V)

For whither fled they when they fled from Thy presence? Or where dost Thou not find them?

  4. Cita 139:8 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture VIII)

… have dared to circumscribe God's providence by the clouds and the heaven, and to alienate from God the things on earth; having forgotten the Psalm which says, If I go up into heaven, Thou art there, if I go down into hell, Thou art present.

  5. Cita 139:14 Basil of Caesarea, Hexaemeron (Homily IX)

Yet the beholding of heaven and earth does not make us know God better than the attentive study of our being does; I am, says the Prophet, fearfully and wonderfully made; that is to say, in observing myself I have known Thy infinite wisdom.
