1 For the end, a Psalm for the sons of Korah.
·
2 Hear these words, all ye nations, Hearken, all ye that dwell upon the earth:
3 Both the sons of mean men, and sons of [great] men; The rich and poor [man] together.
4 My mouth shall speak of wisdom; And the meditation of my heart shall bring [forth] understanding.
5 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my riddle on the harp.
6 Wherefore should I fear in the evil day? The iniquity of my heel shall compass me.
7 They that trust in their strength, And boast themselves in the multitude of their wealth—
8 A brother does not redeem, shall a man redeem? He shall not give to God a ransom for himself,
9 Or the price of the redemption of his soul, Though he labor forever,
10 and live to the end, [So] that he should not see corruption.
11 When he shall see wise men dying, The fool and the senseless one shall perish together; And they shall leave their wealth to strangers.
12 And their sepulchers are their houses forever, [Even] their tabernacles to all generations: They have called their lands after their own names.
13 And man being in honor, understands not: He is compared to the senseless cattle, and is like to them.
14 This their way is an offense to them: Yet afterward men will commend their sayings. Pause.
(Selah.)
15 They have laid [them] as sheep in Hades; death shall feed on them; And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, And their help shall fail in Hades from their glory.
16 But God shall deliver my soul From the power of Hades, when he shall receive me. Pause.
(Selah.)
17 Fear not when a man is enriched, And when the glory of his house is increased.
49:16 No temas cuando se enriquece alguno, cuando aumenta la gloria de su casa;
18 For he shall take nothing when he dies; Neither shall his glory descend with him.
19 For his soul shall be blessed in his life: He shall give thanks to thee when thou dost well to him.
20 [Yet] he shall go in to the generation of his fathers; He shall never see light.
21 Man that is in honor, understands not: He is compared to the senseless cattle, and is like them.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 49.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XLVIII)

The title of this Psalm is, "A song of praise, to the sons of Korah, on the second day of the week." Concerning this what the Lord deigneth to grant receive ye like sons of the firmament.

  2. Quotes verse 49:12 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Preface)

… lost the true rationality, and living irrationally, opposed the righteousness of God, giving himself over to every earthly spirit, and serving all lusts; as says the prophet, "Man, being in honour, did not understand: he was assimilated to senseless beasts, and made like to them." Chapter V.--The author returns to his former argument, and shows that there was but one …

  3. Quotes verse 49:20 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XIII, Chapters XXII–XXIV)

For this he doth by the discernment of his mind, whereby he perceiveth the things "of the Spirit of God;" whereas, otherwise, man being placed in honour, had no understanding, and is compared unto the brute beasts, and is become like unto them. In Thy Church, therefore, O our God, according to Thy grace which Thou hast accorded unto it, …

  5. Quotes verse 49:11 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XV, Chapter 20)

It is of such the Psalmist says, "They call their lands after their own names." Wherefore they incur what is written in another psalm: "Thou, O Lord, in Thy city wilt despise their image." But as for the son of Seth, the son of the resurrection, let him hope to call on the name of the Lord God.
