6 Y el día siguiente madrugaron, y ofrecieron holocaustos, y presentaron pacíficos: y sentóse el pueblo á comer y á beber, y levantáronse á regocijarse.
11 И҆ помоли́сѧ мѡѷсе́й пред̾ гдⷭ҇емъ бг҃омъ и҆ речѐ: вскꙋ́ю, гдⷭ҇и, ꙗ҆ри́шисѧ гнѣ́вомъ на лю́ди твоѧ̑, и҆̀хже и҆зве́лъ є҆сѝ и҆з̾ землѝ є҆гѵ́петскїѧ крѣ́постїю вели́кою и҆ мы́шцею твое́ю высо́кою;
21 И҆ речѐ мѡѷсе́й а҆арѡ́нꙋ: что̀ сотвори́ша тебѣ̀ лю́дїе сі́и, ꙗ҆́кѡ наве́лъ є҆сѝ на ни́хъ грѣ́хъ вели́къ;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 32:7 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters LIII–LVIII)

They have speedily departed from the way in which I commanded them to walk, and have made to themselves molten images." And the Lord said unto him, "I have spoken to thee once and again, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people: let Me destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; …

  3. Quotes verse 32:32 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXXVIII)

"Lord," he says, "if Thou wilt forgive their sin, forgive; but if not, blot me out of Thy book which Thou hast written." With what a father's and mother's fondness, yet with what assurance said he this, as he considered at once the justice and the mercy of God; that in that He is just, He would not destroy the …
