3 Señor, á tus profetas han muerto, y tus altares han derruído; y yo he quedado solo, y procuran matarme.
7 ¿Qué pues? Lo que buscaba Israel aquello no ha alcanzado; mas la elección lo ha alcanzado: y los demás fueron endurecidos;
12 А҆́ще ли же прегрѣше́нїе и҆́хъ бога́тство мі́ра, и҆ ѿпаде́нїе и҆́хъ бога́тство ꙗ҆зы́кѡвъ: кольмѝ па́че и҆сполне́нїе и҆́хъ;
14 А҆́ще ка́кѡ раздражꙋ̀ мою̀ пло́ть, и҆ спасꙋ̀ нѣ̑кїѧ ѿ ни́хъ;
15 А҆́ще бо ѿложе́нїе и҆́хъ, примире́нїе мі́рꙋ, что̀ прїѧ́тїе, ра́звѣ жи́знь и҆з̾ ме́ртвыхъ;
17 Que si algunas de las ramas fueron quebradas, y tú, siendo acebuche, has sido ingerido en lugar de ellas, y has sido hecho participante de la raíz y de la grosura de la oliva;
No te ensoberbezcas, antes teme,
21 Que si Dios no perdonó á las ramas naturales, á ti tampoco no perdone.
24 А҆́ще бо ты̀ ѿ є҆сте́ственныѧ ѿсѣ́ченъ ди́вїѧ ма́слины, и҆ чрез̾ є҆стество̀ прицѣпи́лсѧ є҆сѝ къ до́брѣй ма́слинѣ: кольмѝ па́че сі́и, и҆̀же по є҆стествꙋ̀, прицѣпѧ́тсѧ свое́й ма́слинѣ;
25 Porque no quiero, hermanos, que ignoréis este misterio, para que no seáis acerca de vosotros mismos arrogantes: que el endurecimiento en parte ha acontecido en Israel, hasta que haya entrado la plenitud de los Gentiles;
26 Y luego todo Israel será salvo; como está escrito: Vendrá de Sión el Libertador, que quitará de Jacob la impiedad;
30 Porque como también vosotros en algún tiempo no creísteis á Dios, mas ahora habéis alcanzado misericordia por la incredulidad de ellos;
34 Кто̀ бо̀ разꙋмѣ̀ ᲂу҆́мъ гдⷭ҇ень, и҆лѝ кто̀ совѣ́тникъ є҆мꙋ̀ бы́сть;
34 Porque ¿quién entendió la mente del Señor? ¿ó quién fué su consejero?
35 И҆лѝ кто̀ пре́жде дадѐ є҆мꙋ̀, и҆ возда́стсѧ є҆мꙋ̀;
36 Porque de él, y por él, y en él, son todas las cosas. A él sea gloria por siglos. Amén.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 11:7 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Romans (Homily XIX)

    He had said that God did not cast off His people; and to show in what sense He had not cast them off, he takes refuge in the Prophets again.

  2. Quotes verse 11:16 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapter VIII)

    And that the Saviour received first-fruits of those whom He was to save, Paul declared when he said, "And if the first-fruits be holy, the lump is also holy," teaching that the expression "first-fruits" denoted that which is spiritual, but that "the lump" meant us, that is, the animal Church, the lump of which they say He assumed, and blended …

  3. Quotes verse 11:33 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IV, Chapters IV–VII)

    What was it that Thou didst then, O my God, and how unsearchable are the depths of Thy judgments! For when, sore sick of a fever, he long lay unconscious in a death-sweat, and all despaired of his recovery, he was baptized without his knowledge; myself meanwhile little caring, presuming that his soul would retain rather what it had imbibed …

  4. Quotes verse 11:28 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily IX)

    "But yet Paul," one may say, "allows them, saying on this wise, As touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sake.'" But tell me, when, and of what things was he discoursing, and to whom?

  5. Quotes verse 11:24 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (First Catechetical Lecture)

    Thou art transplanted henceforth among the spiritual olive-trees, being grafted from the wild into the good olive-tree, from sins into righteousness, from pollutions into purity.
