1 Six days later Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John, with him and they went up a high mountain to be by themselves.
1 After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain by themselves.
2 He was transformed in front of them. His face was shining like the sun. His clothes turned white as light.
2 He was changed before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light.
3 Then suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared before them, talking together with Jesus.
3 Behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them talking with him.
4 Peter spoke up, saying to Jesus, “Lord, it's really good to be here. If you want I'll make three shelters—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
4 Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, let’s make three tents here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my son whom I love, who pleases me. Listen to him.”
5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.”
6 When they heard this, the disciples fell down on their faces, absolutely terrified.
6 When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.
7 Jesus went over to them and touched them. “Get up,” he told them. “Don't be afraid.”
7 Entonces Jesús llegando, los tocó, y dijo: Levantaos, y no temáis.
7 Jesus came and touched them and said, “Get up, and don’t be afraid.”
8 When they looked up they didn't see anybody there except Jesus.
8 Lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus alone.
9 As they descended the mountain Jesus gave them strict instructions. “Don't tell anybody what you saw until the Son of man has risen from the dead,” he told them.
9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Don’t tell anyone what you saw, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”
10 “So why do the religious teachers say that Elijah has to come first?” his disciples asked.
10 His disciples asked him, saying, “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
11 “It's true that Elijah comes to put everything in place,” Jesus replied,
11 Jesus answered them, “Elijah indeed comes first, and will restore all things;
12 “but I tell you that Elijah has already come and yet people didn't recognize who he was. They did whatever they felt like to him. In the same way the Son of man will also suffer at their hands.”
12 but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they didn’t recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them.”
13 Then the disciples realized that Jesus was referring to John the Baptist.
13 Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptizer.
14 When they approached the crowd, a man came to Jesus, and kneeled before him.
14 When they came to the multitude, a man came to him, kneeling down to him and saying,
15 “Lord, please have mercy on my son,” he said. “He loses his mind and suffers such terrible fits that he often falls in the fire or into water.
15 “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is epileptic and suffers grievously; for he often falls into the fire, and often into the water.
16 I brought him to your disciples but they couldn't heal him.”
16 So I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him.”
17 “You people refuse to trust me, and are so corrupt!” Jesus responded. “How long do I have to remain here with you? How long do I have to put up with you? Bring him here to me!”
17 Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation! How long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to me.”
18 Jesus confronted the demon and it left the boy, and he was healed straight away.
18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it went out of him, and the boy was cured from that hour.
19 Later the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked him, “Why couldn't we drive it out?”
19 Entonces, llegándose los discípulos á Jesús, aparte, dijeron: ¿Por qué nosotros no lo pudimos echar fuera?
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, “Why weren’t we able to cast it out?”
20 “Because you don't trust enough,” Jesus told them. “I tell you, even if your trust was as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible for you.”
20 He said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For most certainly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

21 But this kind doesn’t go out except by prayer and fasting.”
22 As they were walking together through Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of man is going to be betrayed and people will have power over him.
22 While they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men,
23 They will kill him, but on the third day he will rise again.” The disciples were filled with sadness.
23 and they will kill him, and the third day he will be raised up.” They were exceedingly sorry.
24 When they arrived at Capernaum, those who were in charge of collecting the half-shekel Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, “Your teacher does pay the half-shekel tax, doesn't he?”
24 When they had come to Capernaum, those who collected the didrachma coins came to Peter, and said, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the didrachma?”
25 “Yes, of course,” Peter replied. When he returned to where they were staying, Jesus anticipated the issue. “What do you think, Simon?” Jesus asked him. “Do the kings of this world collect their taxes and duties from their own sons or from others?”
25 He said, “Yes.” When he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute? From their children, or from strangers?”
26 “From others,” Peter replied. So Jesus told him, “In that case the sons are exempt.
26 Peter said to him, “From strangers.” Jesus said to him, “Therefore the children are exempt.
27 But to avoid giving offense to anyone, go to the lake, and throw out a fishing line with a hook. Pull in the first fish you catch, and when you open its mouth there you'll find a stater coin. Take the coin and give it to them for both me and you.”
27 But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin. Take that, and give it to them for me and you.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
