1 Zato, braćo sveta, zajedničari zvanja nebeskog, poznajte poslanika i vladiku, kog mi priznajemo, Isusa Hrista,
1 POR tanto, hermanos santos, participantes de la vocación celestial, considerad al Apóstol y Pontífice de nuestra profesión, Cristo Jesús;
5 Y Moisés á la verdad fué fiel sobre toda su casa, como siervo, para testificar lo que se había de decir;
9 Gde me iskušaše očevi vaši, iskušaše me, i gledaše dela moja četrdeset godina.
9 Donde me tentaron vuestros padres; me probaron, y vieron mis obras cuarenta años.
10 Toga radi rasrdih se na taj rod, i rekoh: Jednako se metu u srcima, ali oni ne poznaše puteve moje;
12 Gledajte, braćo, da ne bude kad u kome od vas zlo srce neverstva da odstupi od Boga Živoga;
13 nego se utešavajte svaki dan, dokle se danas govori, da koji od vas ne odrveni od prevare grehovne;
14 jer postadosmo zajedničari Hristu, samo ako kako smo počeli u Njemu biti do kraja tvrdo održimo;
14 Porque participantes de Cristo somos hechos, con tal que conservemos firme hasta el fin el principio de nuestra confianza;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 3:7 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Hebrews (Homily VI)

    Paul, having treated of hope, and having said that "We are His house, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end" ( c. iii. ver. 6 ); next shows that we ought to look forward with firmness, and he proves this from the Scriptures.

  2. Quotes verse 3:2 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters XIV–XVIII)

    … righteous man, and blameless, truthful, God-fearing, and one that kept himself from all evil." But bringing an accusation against himself, he said, "No man is free from defilement, even if his life be but of one day." Moses was called faithful in all God's house; and through his instrumentality, God punished Egypt with plagues and tortures.

  3. Quotes verse 3:5 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter VI)

    … Moses himself, being a man of God, was indeed given as a god before Pharaoh; but he is not properly termed Lord, nor is called God by the prophets, but is spoken of by the Spirit as "Moses, the faithful minister and servant of God," which also he was.

  4. Quotes verse 3:3 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXVII)

    For neither when John saith, "He is mightier than I," doth he say it as comparing them; nor Paul, when remembering Moses he writes, "For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses," doth he so write by way of comparison; and He Himself too, in saying, "Behold, a greater than Solomon is here," speaks not as making …

  5. Quotes verse 3:13 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XV)

    According as Paul says in another place, And exhort each other daily, while it is called to-day; meaning, "continually." For as we may not speak of the "beginning of the days" of Christ, so neither suffer thou that any should ever speak of the end of His kingdom.
