3 A u onom gradu beše jedna udovica i dolažaše k njemu govoreći: Ne daj me mom suparniku.
7 A kamoli Bog neće odbraniti izbranih svojih koji Ga mole dan i noć?
11 El Fariseo, en pie, oraba consigo de esta manera: Dios, te doy gracias, que no soy como los otros hombres, ladrones, injustos, adúlteros, ni aun como este publicano;
15 Donošahu k Njemu i decu da ih se dotakne; a kad videše učenici, zapretiše im.
16 A Isus dozvavši ih reče: Pustite decu neka dolaze k meni, i ne branite im; jer je takvih carstvo Božije.
18 I zapita Ga jedan knez govoreći: Učitelju blagi!
19 A Isus reče mu: Što me zoveš blagim? Niko nije blag osim jednog Boga.
20 Zapovesti znaš: ne čini preljube; ne ubij; ne ukradi; ne svedoči lažno; poštuj oca i mater svoju.
20 Los mandamientos sabes: No matarás: No adulterarás: No hurtarás: No dirás falso testimonio: Honra á tu padre y á tu madre.
21 A on reče: Sve sam ovo sačuvao od mladosti svoje.
23 A kad on ču to postade žalostan, jer beše vrlo bogat.
27 A On reče: Šta je u ljudi nemoguće u Boga je moguće.
28 A Petar reče: Eto mi smo ostavili sve i za Tobom idemo.
28 Entonces Pedro dijo: He aquí, nosotros hemos dejado las posesiones nuestras, y te hemos seguido.
32 Jer će Ga predati neznabošcima, i narugaće Mu se, i ružiće Ga, i popljuvaće Ga,
33 i biće Ga, i ubiće Ga; i treći dan ustaće.
35 Y aconteció que acercándose él á Jericó, un ciego estaba sentado junto al camino mendigando;
36 A kad ču narod gde prolazi zapita: Šta je to?
37 I kazaše mu da Isus Nazarećanin prolazi.
37 Y dijéronle que pasaba Jesús Nazareno.
38 I povika govoreći: Isuse, sine Davidov! Pomiluj me.
38 Entonces dió voces, diciendo: Jesús, Hijo de David, ten misericordia de mí.
39 I prećahu mu oni što iđahu napred da ućuti; a on još više vikaše: Sine Davidov! Pomiluj me.
40 I Isus stade i zapovedi da Mu ga dovedu; a kad Mu se približi, zapita ga
A on reče: Gospode! Da progledam.
41 Diciendo: ¿Qué quieres que te haga? Y él dijo: Señor, que vea.
42 A Isus reče: Progledaj; vera tvoja pomože ti.
42 Y Jesús le dijo: Ve, tu fe te ha hecho salvo.
43 I odmah progleda, i pođe za Njim hvaleći Boga.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 18:1 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXV)

The lesson of the Holy Gospel builds us up unto the duty of praying and believing, and of not putting our trust in ourselves, but in the Lord. What greater encouragement to prayer than the parable which is proposed to us of the unjust judge?

  2. Quotes verse 18:18 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters XX–XXI)

And to the person who said to Him, "Good Master," He confessed that God who is truly good, saying, "Why callest thou Me good: there is One who is good, the Father in the heavens;" and they assert that in this passage the Æons receive the name of heavens.

  3. Quotes verse 18:10 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon VIII)

It were well for him to imitate the Publican, and not swell as the Pharisee, "who went up into the temple," and boasted of his deserts, and covered up his wounds.

  4. Quotes verse 18:30 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XI)

For instance, to them that strip themselves of all that they have for His sake He promised to give an hundred fold in the present world, and life eternal in that which is to come; by the things already given making the future also credible.

  5. Quotes verse 18:19 Gregory of Nazianzus, Theological Orations (The Fourth Theological Oration, Which is the Second Concerning the Son)

The eighth passage is, That they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom Thou hast sent; and There is none good save one, that is, God. The solution of this appears to me very easy.
