3 I ako vam ko reče: Šta to činite? Kažite: Treba Gospodu; i odmah će ga poslati ovamo.
7 I dovedoše magare k Isusu, i metnuše na nj haljine svoje; i usede na nj.
10 Blagosloveno carstvo oca našeg Davida koji ide u ime Gospodnje!
11 I uđe Isus u Jerusalim, i u crkvu; i promotrivši sve, kad bi uveče, izađe u Vitaniju s dvanaestoricom.
I slušahu učenici Njegovi.
15 Vienen, pues, á Jerusalem; y entrando Jesús en el templo, comenzó á echar fuera á los que vendían y compraban en el templo; y trastornó las mesas de los cambistas, y las sillas de los que vendían palomas;
17 I učaše govoreći im: Nije li pisano: Dom moj neka se zove dom molitve svim narodima? A vi načiniste od njega hajdučku pećinu.
22 I odgovarajući Isus reče im:
27 I dođoše opet u Jerusalim; i kad hođaše po crkvi dođoše k Njemu glavari sveštenički i književnici i starešine,
27 Y volvieron á Jerusalem; y andando él por el templo, vienen á él los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los escribas, y los ancianos;
28 i rekoše Mu: Kakvom vlasti to činiš? I ko ti dade vlast tu, da to činiš?
Respondedme.
31 I mišljahu u sebi govoreći: Ako kažemo: S neba, reći će: Zašto mu dakle ne verovaste?
33 I odgovarajući rekoše Isusu: Ne znamo. I Isus odgovarajući reče njima: Ni ja vama neću kazati kakvom vlasti ovo činim.
33 Y respondiendo, dicen á Jesús: No sabemos.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 11:13 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXXIX)

But to this is added, that as we read it in the narrative of the other Evangelist who expressly mentions this, "it was not the time for that fruit." For that was the time when the fig-tree shoots forth its tender leaves, which come, we know, before the fruit; and this we prove, because the day of the Lord's Passion …

  2. Quotes verse 11:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXVII)

"And when He saw a fig tree in the way, He came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only." Another evangelist saith, "The time of figs was not yet;" but if it was not time, how doth the other evangelist say, "He came, if haply He might find fruit thereon." Whence it is manifest that this belongs to …

  3. Quotes verse 11:13 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XLVIII)

For he who says that Christ only worked miracles, for the miracles' sake, may say too that He was ignorant that it was not the time for fruit, when He sought figs upon the fig-tree. For it was not the time for that fruit, as the Evangelist testifies; and yet being hungry He sought for fruit upon the tree.
