1 Sine moj, slušaj mudrost moju, k razumu mom prigni uho svoje,
1 HIJO mío, está atento á mi sabiduría, y á mi inteligencia inclina tu oído;
3 Jer s usana tuđe žene kaplje med, i grlo joj je mekše od ulja;
5 Noge joj silaze k smrti, do pakla dopiru koraci njeni.
8 Aleja de ella tu camino, y no te acerques á la puerta de su casa;
9 Porque no des á los extraños tu honor, y tus años á cruel;
10 Porque no se harten los extraños de tu fuerza, y tus trabajos [estén] en casa del extraño;
12 I kažeš: Kako mrzih na nastavu, i kako srce moje prezira karanje!
12 Y digas: ¡Cómo aborrecí el consejo, y mi corazón menospreció la reprensión;
14 Umalo ne zapadoh u svako zlo usred zbora i skupštine.
18 Blagosloven da je izvor tvoj, i veseli se ženom mladosti svoje;
21 Kad su pred očima Gospodu putevi svačiji, i meri sve staze njegove?
22 Bezbožnika će uhvatiti njegova bezakonja, i u uža greha svojih zaplešće se;
23 Umreće bez nastave, i od mnoštva ludosti svoje lutaće.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 5:22 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter VII)

    … in man." For He called all men that mourn; and granting forgiveness to those who had been led into captivity by their sins, He loosed them from their chains, of whom Solomon says, "Every one shall be holden with the cords of his own sins." Therefore did the Spirit of God descend upon Him, [the Spirit] of Him who had …

    For it is even this Holy Spirit, whom the bad cannot receive, even He is that Fountain of which the Scripture saith, "Let the fountain of thy water be thine own, and let no stranger partake with thee." For all who love not God, are strangers, are antichrists.

    … "Give not heed to a bad woman: for honey droppeth from the lips of a woman that is an harlot, which, for a season, is luscious unto thy throat; but afterwards thou shalt find it more bitter than gall, and sharper than a two-edged sword." Unto these last then let us listen, not unto those.

    Let then thus much suffice concerning those outcasts; and now let us return to the divine Scriptures, and let us drink waters out of our own cisterns [that is, the holy Fathers ], and out of our own springing wells.
