1 Na vodama vavilonskim seđasmo i plakasmo opominjući se Siona.
1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yes, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
2 O vrbama sred njega vešasmo harfe svoje.
2 On the willows in that land, we hung up our harps.
3 For there, those who led us captive asked us for songs. Those who tormented us demanded songs of joy: “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How can we sing Yahweh’s song in a foreign land?
5 Ako zaboravim tebe, Jerusalime, neka me zaboravi desnica moja.
5 Si me olvidare de ti, oh Jerusalem, mi diestra sea olvidada.
5 If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill.
6 Mi lengua se pegue á mi paladar, si de ti no me acordare; si no ensalzare á Jerusalem como preferente asunto de mi alegría.
6 Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I don’t remember you, if I don’t prefer Jerusalem above my chief joy.
7 Napomeni, Gospode, sinovima Edomovim dan jerusalimski, kad govoriše: Raskopajte, raskopajte ga do temelja.
7 Remember, Yahweh, against the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem, who said, “Raze it! Raze it even to its foundation!”
8 Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, he will be happy who repays you, as you have done to us.
9 Blago onome koji uzme i razbije decu tvoju o kamen.
9 Happy shall he be, who takes and dashes your little ones against the rock.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXXVI)

(ver. 1). This Psalm contains the praise of God, and all its verses finish in the same way. Wherefore although many things are related here in praise of God, yet His mercy is most commended; for without this plain commendation, he, whom the Holy Spirit used to utter this Psalm, would have no verse be ended.

And here again: By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down; yea wept.
