PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
6 A pravda koja je od vere ovako govori: Da ne kažeš u srcu svom: Ko će izići na nebo? To jest da svede Hrista;
7 ili: Ko će sići u bezdan? To jest da izvede Hrista iz mrtvih.
8 Ali šta govori pismo? Blizu ti je reč u ustima tvojim i u srcu tvom, to jest reč vere koju propovedamo.
11 Jer pismo govori: Koji Ga god veruje neće se postideti.
14 Kako će, dakle, prizvati koga ne verovaše? A kako će verovati koga ne čuše? A kako će čuti bez propovednika?
14 πῶς οὖν ἐπικαλέσονται εἰς ὃν οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν; πῶς δὲ πιστεύσουσιν οὗ οὐκ ἤκουσαν; πῶς δὲ ἀκούσουσι χωρὶς κηρύσσοντος;
16 Ἀλλ᾽ οὐ πάντες ὑπήκουσαν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ· Ἡσαΐας γὰρ λέγει· Κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσε τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν;
18 Nego, velim: zar ne čuše? Još ode po svoj zemlji glas njihov, i po krajevima vasionog sveta reči njihove.
19 Nego velim: zar ne razume Izrailj? Prvi Mojsije govori: Ja ću razdražiti, ne svojim narodom, nerazumnim narodom rasrdiću vas.
20 A Isaija govori slobodno: Nađoše me koji me ne traže; i javih se onima koji za me ne pitaju.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 10:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Romans (Homily XVII)

    He is now going again to rebuke them more vehemently than before. Wherefore he again does away with every suspicion of hatred, and makes a great effort beforehand to correct misapprehension. Do not then, he says, mind words or accusations, but observe that it is not in any hostile spirit that I say this.

  2. Quotes verse 10:15 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XIII)

    And again, when Paul says, "How beautiful are the feet of those bringing glad tidings of good things, and preaching the Gospel of peace," he shows clearly that it was not merely one, but there were many who used to preach the truth.

  3. Quotes verse 10:14 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book I)

    "But how shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? or how shall they believe without a preacher?" And those who seek the Lord shall praise Him.

  4. Quotes verse 10:2 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily VI)

    … I know nothing by myself," saith one, "yet am I not hereby justified:" --both for what we have done in ignorance, and what in knowledge; "For I bear them record," it is said, "that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge;" but yet this doth not suffice for an excuse for them.

  5. Quotes verse 10:6 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XIV)

    And again he aims at them, and speaks thus, Say not in thine heart, who shall ascend into heaven; or who shall descend into the deep? that is, to bring up Christ from the dead; and in like manner warning as he has elsewhere written again, Remember Jesus Christ raised from the dead; and again, And if Christ be …
