Tyndale Tyndale New Testament (1534)
PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 Chyldren obey youre fathers and mothers in the Lorde: for so is it right.
2 Honoure thy father and mother that is the fyrst commaundement that hath eny promes
3 that thou mayst be in good estate and lyve longe on the erthe.
4 And ye fathers move not youre children to wrath: but bringe the vp with the norter and informacion of the Lorde.
5 Servautes be obedient vnto youre carnall masters with feare and trimblinge in singlenes of youre hertes as vnto Christ:
6 not with service in the eye sight as men pleasars: but as the servautes of Christ doynge the will of God from the herte
7 with good will servinge the Lorde and not men.
8 And remember that whatsoever good thinge eny man doeth that shall he receave agayne of the Lorde whether he be bonde or fre.
9 And ye masters do even the same thinges vnto them puttinge awaye threateninges: and remember that even youre master also is in heven nether is ther eny respecte of person with him.
10 Finally my brethren be stronge in the Lorde and in the power of his myght.
11 Put on the armour of God that ye maye stonde stedfast agaynst the crafty assautes of the devyll.
12 For we wrestle not agaynst flesshe and bloud: but agaynst rule agaynst power and agaynst worldy rulars of the darckenes of this worlde agaynst spretuall wickednes for hevenly thinges.
13 For this cause take vnto you the armoure of God that ye maye be able to resist in the evyll daye and to stonde perfect in all thinges.
14 Stonde therfore and youre loynes gyrd aboute with veritie havinge on the brest plate of rightewesnes
15 and shood with showes prepared by the gospell of peace.
16 Above all take to you the shelde of fayth wherwith ye maye quenche all the fyrie dartes of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvacion and the swearde of the sprete which is the worde of God.
18 And praye all wayes with all maner prayer and supplicacion: and that in the sprete: and watch thervnto with all instance and supplicacion for all saynctes
19 and for me that vttraunce maye be geve vnto me that I maye open my mouth boldly to vtter the secretes of the gospell
20 whereof I am a messenger in bondes that therin I maye speake frely as it becommeth me to speake.
21 But that ye maye also knowe what condicion I am in and what I do Tichicus my deare brother and faythfull minister in the Lorde shall shewe you of all thinges
22 whom I sent vnto you for the same purpose that ye myght knowe what case I stonde in and that he myght comfort youre hertes.
23 Peace be with the brethren and love with fayth from God the father and from the Lorde Iesu Christ.
24 Grace be with all them which love oure lorde Iesus Christ in puernes. Amen. ‘Sent from Rome vnto the Ephesyans by Tichicus.’

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 6:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Ephesians (Homily XXI)

As a man in forming a body, places the head first, after that the neck, then the feet, so does the blessed Paul proceed in his discourse. He has spoken of the husband, he has spoken of the wife, who is second in authority, he now goes on by gradual advances to the third rank--which is that of children.

  2. Quotes verse 6:16 Augustine of Hippo, On Christian Doctrine (Book III, Chapters 22–27)

For we hear also of the shield of faith, "wherewith," says the apostle, "ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." Nor ought we, on the other hand, in regard to spiritual armor of this kind to assign faith to the shield only; for we read in another place of the breastplate of faith: "putting …

  3. Quotes verse 6:12 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily VI)

Yes, for a grievous conflict is at hand, and against the powers unseen is our wrestling; against "the spiritual wickednesses" our fight, "against principalities, against powers" our warfare: and it is well for us, if when we are earnest and sober and thoroughly awakened, we can be able to sustain that savage phalanx.

  4. Quotes verse 6:16 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture V)

… watch not; but, since the enemy is unseen, we have faith as our strong armour, according to the saying of the Apostle, In all things taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

  5. Quotes verse 6:10 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapters VII–VIII)

… true, says, "In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us." But in a phrase of this kind there is no suggestion of any lowly and subordinate ministry, but rather of the succour rendered "in the power of his might." For He Himself has bound the strong man and spoiled his goods, that is, us …
