1 Then was Iesus ledd awaye of the spirite into wildernes to be tempted of the devyll.
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 And when he had fasted fourtye dayes and fourtye nightes he was afterward an hungred.
2 Y habiendo ayunado cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, después tuvo hambre.
2 When he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry afterward.
3 Then came to hym the tempter and sayde: yf thou be the sonne of God commaunde that these stones be made breed.
3 The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 He answered and sayde: that is wrytten man shall not lyve by brede onlye but by every worde that proceadeth out of the mouth of God.
4 But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’”
5 Then the devyll tooke hym vp into the holy cite and set hym on a pynacle of the temple
5 Then the devil took him into the holy city. He set him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6 and sayd vnto hym: yf thou be the sonne of God cast thy sylfe doune. For it is wrytte he shall geve his angels charge over the and with their handes they shall holde that vp that thou dashe not thy fote agaynst a stone.
6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you don’t dash your foot against a stone.’”
7 And Iesus sayde to hym it ys wrytten also: Thou shalt not tempte thy Lorde God.
7 Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test the Lord, your God.’”
8 The devyll toke hym vp agayne and ledde hym in to an excedynge hye mountayne and shewed hym all the kyngdomes of the worlde and all the glorie of them
8 Again, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9 And sayde to hym: all these will I geue the if thou wilt faull doune and worship me.
9 Y dícele: Todo esto te daré, si postrado me adorares.
9 He said to him, “I will give you all of these things, if you will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then sayde Iesus vnto hym. Avoyd Satan. For it is writte thou shalt worshyp the Lorde thy God and hym only shalt thou serve.
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”
11 Then the dyvell left hym and beholde the angels came and ministred vnto hym.
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and served him.
12 When Iesus had hearde that Ihon was taken he departed into Galile
12 Mas oyendo Jesús que Juan era preso, se volvió á Galilea;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

Then. When? After the descent of the Spirit, after the voice that was borne from above, and said, "This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." And what was marvellous, it was of the Holy Spirit; for this, he here saith, led Him up.
