Vamvas Modern Greek Bible: Vamvas (1850)
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
3 Pueblo mío, ¿qué te he hecho, ó en qué te he molestado? Responde contra mí.
6 Με τι θέλω ελθεί ενώπιον του Κυρίου, να προσκυνήσω ενώπιον του υψίστου Θεού; θέλω ελθεί ενώπιον αυτού με ολοκαυτώματα, με μόσχους ενιαυσίους;
7 Θέλει ευαρεστηθή ο Κύριος εις χιλιάδας κριών ή εις μυριάδας ποταμών ελαίου; θέλω δώσει τον πρωτότοκόν μου διά την παράβασίν μου, τον καρπόν της κοιλίας μου διά την αμαρτίαν της ψυχής μου;
8 Αυτός σοι έδειξεν, άνθρωπε, τι το καλόν και τι ζητεί ο Κύριος παρά σου, ειμή να πράττης το δίκαιον και να αγαπάς έλεος και να περιπατής ταπεινώς μετά του Θεού σου;
10 Υπάρχουσιν έτι οι θησαυροί της ασεβείας εν τω οίκω του ασεβούς και το ελλιπές μέτρον το βδελυκτόν;
11 να δικαιώσω αυτούς με τας ασεβείς πλάστιγγας και με το σακκίον των δολίων ζυγίων;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 6:6–8 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book X, Chapters 4–6)

    Hath He showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" In the words of this prophet, these two things are distinguished and set forth with sufficient explicitness, that God does not require these sacrifices for their own sakes, …

  2. Quotes verse 6:3 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXIX)

    See, for example, how He Himself, the insulted one, discourses with us, both in the Old Testament, and in the New; in the one saying, "O my people, what have I done unto thee?" in the other, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me." And Paul too bids, "In meekness instruct those that oppose themselves." And Christ again, when His disciples …

  3. Quotes verse 6:3 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXVIII)

    … there indeed He saith, "What ought I to have done to my vineyard, that I did not;" and elsewhere again, "What transgression have your fathers found in me?" And again, "O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I grieved thee?" showing their thankless disposition, and that when in the enjoyment of all things, they requited …
