Vamvas Modern Greek Bible: Vamvas (1850)
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 For the Chief Musician. A contemplation by the sons of Korah. As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God.
2 Διψά η ψυχή μου τον Θεόν, τον Θεόν τον ζώντα· πότε θέλω ελθεί και θέλω φανή ενώπιον του Θεού;
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
3 Τα δάκρυά μου έγειναν τροφή μου ημέραν και νύκτα, όταν μοι λέγωσι καθ' ημέραν, Που είναι ο Θεός σου;
3 My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually ask me, “Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember, and pour out my soul within me, how I used to go with the crowd, and led them to God’s house, with the voice of joy and praise, a multitude keeping a holy day.
5 Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence.
6 My God, my soul is in despair within me. Therefore I remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon, from the hill Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterfalls. All your waves and your billows have swept over me.
8 Yahweh will command his loving kindness in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the God of my life.
9 Θέλω ειπεί προς τον Θεόν, την πέτραν μου, διά τι με ελησμόνησας; διά τι περιπατώ σκυθρωπός εκ της καταθλίψεως του εχθρού;
9 I will ask God, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 Οι εχθροί μου ονειδίζοντές με συντρίβουσι τα οστά μου, λέγοντές μοι καθ' ημέραν, Που είναι ο Θεός σου;
10 As with a sword in my bones, my adversaries reproach me, while they continually ask me, “Where is your God?”
11 Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

    Whence the soul, whose wandering has been made far away, may understand, if now she thirsts for Thee, if now her tears have become bread to her, while it is daily said unto her "Where is thy God?" if she now seeketh of Thee one thing, and desireth that she may dwell in Thy house all the days of her …

    … because Thy Spirit was "borne over the waters," Thy mercy forsook not our misery, and Thou saidst, "Let there be light," "Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Repent ye, let there be light. And because our soul was troubled within us, we remembered Thee, O Lord, from the land of Jordan, and that mountain equal unto …
