Vamvas Modern Greek Bible: Vamvas (1850)
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
3 Acerca de su Hijo, (que fué hecho de la simiente de David según la carne;
11 Porque os deseo ver, para repartir con vosotros algún don espiritual, para confirmaros;
14 A Griegos y á bárbaros, á sabios y á no sabios soy deudor.
22 Diciéndose ser sabios, se hicieron fatuos,
29 Estando atestados de toda iniquidad, de fornicación, de malicia, de avaricia, de maldad; llenos de envidia, de homicidios, de contiendas, de engaños, de malignidades;
31 Necios, desleales, sin afecto natural, implacables, sin misericordia:

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 1:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Romans (Homily I)

Moses having written five books, has nowhere put his own name to them, neither have they who after him put together the history of events after him, no nor yet has Matthew, nor John, nor Mark, nor Luke; but the blessed Paul everywhere in his Epistles sets his own name. Now why was this?

  2. Quotes verse 1:1–4 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XVI)

… the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was made to Him of the seed of David according to the flesh, who was predestinated the Son of God with power through the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead of our Lord Jesus Christ." And again, writing to the Romans about Israel, he says: "Whose are the fathers, and …

  4. Quotes verse 1:18 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXVI)

And, "That the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness, and unrighteousness of men," and, "indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile." And yet countless were the evils which the Gentiles have suffered in this world, and this is declared alike …
