VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 In illo tempore audivit Herodes tetrarcha famam Jesu:
3 Porque Herodes había prendido á Juan, y le había aprisionado y puesto en la cárcel, por causa de Herodías, mujer de Felipe su hermano;
4 Dicebat enim illi Joannes: Non licet tibi habere eam.
5 Et volens illum occidere, timuit populum: quia sicut prophetam eum habebant.
8 At illa præmonita a matre sua: Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput Joannis Baptistæ.
10 Misitque et decollavit Joannem in carcere.
12 Et accedentes discipuli ejus, tulerunt corpus ejus, et sepelierunt illud: et venientes nuntiaverunt Jesu.
16 Jesus autem dixit eis: Non habent necesse ire: date illis vos manducare.
22 Et statim compulit Jesus discipulos ascendere in naviculam, et præcedere eum trans fretum, donec dimitteret turbas.
23 Et dimissa turba, ascendit in montem solus orare.
27 Statimque Jesus locutus est eis, dicens: Habete fiduciam: ego sum, nolite timere.
27 Mas luego Jesús les habló, diciendo: Confiad, yo soy; no tengáis miedo.
29 At ipse ait: Veni.
30 Videns vero ventum validum, timuit: et cum cœpisset mergi, clamavit dicens: Domine, salvum me fac.
30 Mas viendo el viento fuerte, tuvo miedo; y comenzándose á hundir, dió voces, diciendo: Señor, sálvame.
31 Et continuo Jesus extendens manum, apprehendit eum: et ait illi: Modicæ fidei, quare dubitasti?
35 Y como le conocieron los hombres de aquel lugar, enviaron por toda aquella tierra alrededor, y trajeron á él todos los enfermos;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 14:24 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXV)

The lesson of the Gospel which we have just heard is a lesson of humility to us all, that we may see and know where we are, and whither we must tend and hasten. For that ship which carries the disciples, which was tossed in the waves by a contrary wind, is not without its meaning.

  2. Commentary 14:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XLIX)

See Him on every occasion "departing," For not by His appearance only, but by His actions He would have this confirmed, because He knew the devil's craft, and that he would leave nothing undone to destroy this doctrine.

  3. Quotes verse 14:19 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapters XXIII–XXIV)

Soter is a name of five letters; Pater, too, contains five letters; Agape (love), too, consists of five letters; and our Lord, after blessing the five loaves, fed with them five thousand men.

  4. Quotes verse 14:33 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXV)

Nevertheless after He was come up into the ship, they who were being borne in her, came saying, "Of a truth Thou art the Son of God." But before this plain discovery of Himself they were troubled, saying, "It is a phantom." But He coming up into the ship took away the fluctuation of mind from their hearts, when they …
