Notes on this text (2)

Psalm 128 in VUL = Psalm 129 in RV1909.

VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 Canticum graduum. [Sæpe expugnaverunt me a juventute mea, dicat nunc Israël;
129:1 Cántico gradual. MUCHO me han angustiado desde mi juventud, puede decir ahora Israel;
2 sæpe expugnaverunt me a juventute mea: etenim non potuerunt mihi.
3 Supra dorsum meum fabricaverunt peccatores; prolongaverunt iniquitatem suam.
4 Dominus justus concidit cervices peccatorum.
6 Fiant sicut fœnum tectorum, quod priusquam evellatur exaruit:
Benediximus vobis in nomine Domini.]

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 129.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXVIII)

    Felix the Martyr, truly Felix, i.e. "Happy" both in his name and his crown, whose birthday this is, despised the world. Was he, because he feared the Lord, thence happy, thence blessed, because his wife was as a fruitful vine upon the earth, and his children stood around his table?
