Notes on this text (2)

Psalm 51 in VUL = Psalm 52 in RV1909.

VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 In finem. Intellectus David,
·
·
3 [Quid gloriaris in malitia, qui potens es in iniquitate?
4 Tota die injustitiam cogitavit lingua tua; sicut novacula acuta fecisti dolum.
52:2 Agravios maquina tu lengua: como navaja amolada hace engaño.
5 Dilexisti malitiam super benignitatem; iniquitatem magis quam loqui æquitatem.
(Selah.)
6 Dilexisti omnia verba præcipitationis; lingua dolosa.
52:4 Has amado toda suerte de palabras perniciosas, engañosa lengua.
(Selah.)
8 Videbunt justi, et timebunt; et super eum ridebunt, et dicent:
11 Confitebor tibi in sæculum, quia fecisti; et exspectabo nomen tuum, quoniam bonum est in conspectu sanctorum tuorum.]

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 52.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LI)

Neither must this multitude's throng be defrauded, nor their infirmity burthened. Silence we ask, and quiet, in order that our voice, after yesterday's labour, be able with some little vigour to last out.

  2. Quotes verse 52:8 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XV, Chapter 20)

For he prefigures that society of men which says, "But I am like a green olive-tree in the house of God: I have trusted in the mercy of God." But let him not seek the empty honors of a famous name upon earth, for "Blessed is the man that maketh the name of the Lord his trust, and respecteth not …
