1 This is what the Lord told me to do: Go and buy yourself a linen loincloth and put it on, but don't wash it.
1 ASÍ me dijo Jehová: Ve, y cómprate un cinto de lino, y cíñelo sobre tus lomos, y no lo meterás en agua.
2 So I went and bought a loincloth as the Lord had instructed me, and I put it on.
2 Y compré el cinto conforme á la palabra de Jehová, y púselo sobre mis lomos.
3 Then the Lord gave me another message:
3 Y fué á mí segunda vez palabra de Jehová, diciendo:
4 Take the loincloth that you bought and put on, and go immediately to the River Perath and hide it there in a hole among the rocks.
4 Toma el cinto que compraste, que está sobre tus lomos, y levántate, y ve al Eufrates, y escóndelo allá en la concavidad de una peña.
5 So I went and hid it at the River Perath, as the Lord had told me.
5 Fuí pues, y escondílo junto al Eufrates, como Jehová me mandó.
6 A long time later the Lord told me, Go to Perath, and get the loincloth that I ordered you to hide there.
6 Y sucedió que al cabo de muchos días me dijo Jehová: Levántate, y ve al Eufrates, y toma de allí el cinto que te mandé escondieses allá.
7 I went to Perath and dug up the loincloth, and removed it from where I'd hidden it. Obviously it was ruined—completely useless.
7 Entonces fuí al Eufrates, y cavé, y tomé el cinto del lugar donde lo había escondido; y he aquí que el cinto se había podrido; para ninguna cosa era bueno.
8 Then a message from the Lord came to me:
8 Y fué á mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:
9 This is what the Lord says: I will ruin the arrogance of Judah and the great arrogance of Jerusalem in exactly the same way.
9 Así ha dicho Jehová: Así haré podrir la soberbia de Judá, y la mucha soberbia de Jerusalem,
10 These evil people refuse to listen to what I tell them. They follow their own stubborn and evil thinking and run off to worship other gods—they will be like this loincloth, completely useless.
10 A este pueblo malo, que no quieren oir mis palabras, que andan en las imaginaciones de su corazón, y se fueron en pos de dioses ajenos para servirles, y para encorvarse á ellos; y vendrá á ser como este cinto, que para ninguna cosa es bueno.
11 In the same way that a loincloth holds tightly to the body, so I made all the people of Israel and Judah hold tightly to me, declares the Lord. Then they could have been my people, representing me, giving me honor and praise. But they refused to listen.
11 Porque como el cinto se junta á los lomos del hombre, así hice juntar á mí toda la casa de Israel y toda la casa de Judá, dice Jehová, para que me fuesen por pueblo y por fama, y por alabanza y por honra: empero no escucharon.
12 So tell them this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Every wine jar shall be filled with wine. When they reply, “Don't we know that already? Of course every wine jar should be filled with wine!”
12 Les dirás pues esta palabra: Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de Israel: Henchiráse de vino todo odre. Y ellos te dirán: ¿No sabemos que todo odre se henchirá de vino?
13 then tell them that this is what the Lord says: I'm going to make everyone who lives in this land drunk—the kings sitting on David's throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the people of Jerusalem.
13 Entonces les has de decir: Así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que yo lleno de embriaguez todos los moradores de esta tierra, y á los reyes [de la estirpe] de David que se sientan sobre su trono, y á los sacerdotes y profetas, y á todos los moradores de Jerusalem;
14 I'm going to smash them against each other like wine jars, both parents and children, declares the Lord. I won't let any mercy or pity or compassion stop me from destroying them.
14 Y quebrantarélos el uno con el otro, los padres con los hijos juntamente, dice Jehová: no perdonaré, ni tendré piedad ni misericordia, para no destruirlos.
15 Listen and pay attention. Don't be arrogant, for the Lord has spoken.
15 Escuchad y oid; no os elevéis: pues Jehová ha hablado.
16 Honor the Lord your God before he brings the darkness, before you trip and fall in the twilight on the mountains. You long for light to come, but he sends only gloom and complete darkness.
16 Dad gloria á Jehová Dios vuestro, antes que haga venir tinieblas, y antes que vuestros pies tropiecen en montes de oscuridad, y esperéis luz, y os la torne sombra de muerte y tinieblas.
17 But if you refuse to listen, I will weep secretly inside because of your pride. My tears pour down because the Lord's flock has been captured.
17 Mas si no oyereis esto, en secreto llorará mi alma á causa de [vuestra] soberbia; y llorando amargamente, se desharán mis ojos en lágrimas, porque el rebaño de Jehová fué cautivo.
18 Tell the king and the queen mother: Get down from your thrones, because your splendid crowns have fallen from your heads.
18 Di al rey y á la reina: Humillaos, sentaos [en tierra]; porque la corona de vuestra gloria bajó de vuestras cabezas.
19 The towns in the Negev are surrounded; no one can get through to them. The whole of Judah has been taken away into exile, everyone has been exiled.
19 Las ciudades del mediodía fueron cerradas, y no hubo quien las abriese: toda Judá fué trasportada, trasportada fué toda ella.
20 Look up and you'll see the invaders coming from the north. Where is the flock that was given to you to look after? Where are the sheep you were so proud of?
20 Alzad vuestros ojos, y ved los que vienen del aquilón: ¿dónde está el rebaño que te fué dado, la grey de tu gloria?
21 What are you going to say when he puts your enemies in charge of you, people you once counted as your friends? Won't you suffer pains like a woman in labor?
21 ¿Qué dirás cuando te visitará? porque tú los enseñaste [á ser] príncipes [y] cabeza sobre ti. ¿No te tomarán dolores como á mujer que pare?
22 If you say to yourself, Why has this happened to me? it's because you have been so wicked. That's why your skirts were stripped off and you were raped.
22 Cuando dijeres en tu corazón: ¿Por qué me ha sobrevenido esto? Por la enormidad de tu maldad fueron descubiertas tus faldas, fueron desnudos tus calcañares.
23 Can Ethiopians change the color of their skin? Can a leopard change its spots? In the same way you can't change and do good because you're so used to doing evil.
23 ¿Mudará el negro su pellejo, y el leopardo sus manchas? Así también podréis vosotros hacer bien, estando habituados á hacer mal.
24 I'm going to scatter you like chaff blown away by the desert wind.
24 Por tanto yo los esparciré, como tamo que pasa, al viento del desierto.
25 This is what's going to happen to you; this is what I have decided to do to you, declares the Lord, because you have forgotten me and believed in lies.
25 Esta es tu suerte, la porción de tus medidas de parte mía, dice Jehová; porque te olvidaste de mí, y confiaste en la mentira.
26 I will pull your skirts up over your face, so you will be seen naked and ashamed.
26 Yo pues descubriré también tus faldas delante de tu cara, y se manifestará tu ignominia.
27 I watched your acts of adultery and lust, how you prostituted yourselves shamelessly, worshiping idols on the hills and in the fields. Yes, I saw the disgusting things you did. Disaster is coming to you, Jerusalem! How long are you going to remain unclean?
27 Tus adulterios, tus relinchos, la maldad de tu fornicación sobre los collados: en el mismo campo vi tus abominaciones. ¡Ay de ti, Jerusalem! ¿No serás al cabo limpia? ¿hasta cuándo todavía?

Cómo se eligieron
«Comentario» es el comienzo de una homilía o exposición sobre este capítulo (homilías de san Juan Crisóstomo; tratados, sermones y comentarios a los Salmos de san Agustín). «Cita» es una frase en la que las notas de la propia edición identifican la cita de un versículo de este capítulo; solo se conserva si el texto coincide con el versículo. Solo se usan obras de autoría segura. Los Salmos siguen la numeración hebrea (Agustín usa la de los Setenta: su Salmo 50 es aquí el 51).
For Jeremiah too calls the people "a girdle," and makes mention again of "bottles" and of "wine." Thus, the discourse being about gluttony and a table, He takes His illustrations from the same.
