2 The chief priests and religious teachers were looking for a way to kill Jesus, but were afraid of what the people would do. 2 The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put him to death, for they feared the people.
3 Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples. 3 Satan entered into Judas, who was also called Iscariot, who was counted with the twelve.
4 He went and discussed with the chief priests and guard officers how he could betray Jesus. 4 He went away and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them.
5 They were delighted, and offered him money. 5 They were glad, and agreed to give him money.
6 He agreed, and began to look for an opportunity to hand over Jesus when a crowd would not be there. 6 He consented and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude.
7 The Day of Unleavened Bread arrived when the Passover animal had to be sacrificed. 7 The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover must be sacrificed.
8 Jesus sent Peter and John, telling them, “Go and prepare the Passover meal, so we can eat it together.” 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
9 They asked him, “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” 9 They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare?”
9 οἱ δὲ εἶπον αὐτῷ· ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμεν;
10 He replied, “When you enter the city you'll meet a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him and go into the house he enters. 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters.
11 Tell the owner of the house that the Teacher asks you, ‘Where is the dining room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 11 Tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’
11 καὶ ἐρεῖτε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ τῆς οἰκίας· λέγει σοι ὁ διδάσκαλος, ποῦ ἐστι τὸ κατάλυμα ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω;
12 He'll show you a large upstairs room that already has the necessary furniture. Prepare the meal there.” 12 He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there.”
13 They went and found that everything was just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal there. 13 They went, found things as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
14 When the time came, he sat down at the table with his apostles. He told them, 14 When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve apostles.
15 “I've been really looking forward to eating this Passover meal with you before my sufferings begin. 15 He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,
16 I tell you I shall not eat it again until the time is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 16 for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in God’s Kingdom.”
17 Jesus took the cup, and after he had given thanks, he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 17 He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves,
18 I tell you that I won't drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 18 for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until God’s Kingdom comes.”
19 He picked up some bread, and after he had given thanks, he broke it into pieces and gave it to them. “This is my body which is given for you; do this in order to remember me,” Jesus told them. 19 He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.”
20 In the same way after they had finished supper, he picked up the cup and said, “This cup is the new agreement in my blood which is poured out for you.” 20 Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
21 “In spite of this, my betrayer is sitting right here with me at the table. 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.
22 For it has been determined that the Son of man will die, yet how disastrous it will be for his betrayer!” 22 The Son of Man indeed goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!”
23 They began to argue among themselves as to who this might be and who could do this. 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it was who would do this thing.
24 At the same time they also got into a quarrel about which of them was the most important. 24 A dispute also arose among them, which of them was considered to be greatest.
25 Jesus told them, “Foreign kings lord it over their subjects, and those having power even want people to call them ‘benefactors.’ 25 He said to them, “The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’
26 But it should not be so with you! Whoever is highest among you should be like the lowest, and the leader should be like a servant. 26 But not so with you. Rather, the one who is greater among you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves.
27 Who is greater—the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves? Isn't it the one who sits at the table? But I'm among you as the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn’t it he who sits at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
28 You have stayed with me throughout my trials. 28 “But you are those who have continued with me in my trials.
29 And I grant to you authority to rule, just as my Father granted it to me, 29 I confer on you a kingdom, even as my Father conferred on me,
30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
31 “Simon, Simon—Satan has asked to have all of you to sift like wheat, 31 The Lord said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have all of you, that he might sift you as wheat,
32 but I have prayed for you that your trust in me may not fail. And when you have returned, encourage your brothers.” 32 but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn’t fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers.”
33 Peter said, “Lord, I'm ready to go with you to prison, and to die with you!” 33 He said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!”
34 Jesus replied, “I'm telling you, Peter, before the cock crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.” 34 He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know me three times.”
35 Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out without money, without a bag, and without an extra pair of sandals, did you lack anything?” “No, nothing,” they replied. 35 He said to them, “When I sent you out without purse, bag, and sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.”
36 “But now, if you have money you should take it, as well as a bag, and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 36 Then he said to them, “But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a bag. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.
37 I tell you that this statement in Scripture about me must be fulfilled: ‘He was counted with the wicked.’ What was said about me is now being fulfilled.” 37 For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: ‘He was counted with transgressors.’ For that which concerns me is being fulfilled.”
38 “Look, Lord, here are two swords,” they said. “That's enough,” he replied. 38 They said, “Lord, behold, here are two swords.” He said to them, “That is enough.”
39 Jesus left and as usual went to the Mount of Olives together with his disciples. 39 He came out and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him.
40 When he arrived he said to them, “Pray that you don't give in to temptation.” 40 When he was at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you don’t enter into temptation.”
41 Then he left them and walked about a stone's throw away, where he kneeled down and prayed. 41 He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and he knelt down and prayed,
42 “Father,” he prayed, “if you're willing, please take away this cup of suffering from me. But I want to do what you want, not what I want.” 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
43◆ Then an angel appeared from heaven to strengthen him. 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.
44◆ In great distress Jesus prayed even harder, and his sweat fell like drops of blood onto the ground. 44 Being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.
45 He finished praying, stood up, and went over to the disciples. He found them asleep, worn out by grief. 45 When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief,
46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you won't fall into temptation.” 46 and said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
47 While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. Judas went up to Jesus to kiss him. 47 While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared. He who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him.
48 But Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?” 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
48 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἰούδα, φιλήματι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδως;
49 Jesus' followers asked him, “Lord, should we attack them with our swords?” 49 When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
49 ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν τὸ ἐσόμενον εἶπον αὐτῷ· Κύριε, εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρᾳ;
50 And one of them struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. 50 A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 “Stop! No more of this!” said Jesus. He touched the man's ear and healed him. 51 But Jesus answered, “Let me at least do this”—and he touched his ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus spoke to the chief priests, and the officers of the Temple guard, and the elders. “Am I some kind of criminal that you had to come with swords and clubs?” he asked. 52 Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
52 εἶπε δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς παραγενομένους ἐπ᾽ αὐτὸν ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ στρατηγοὺς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ πρεσβυτέρους· ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξεληλύθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων;
53 “You didn't arrest me before, even though I was with you in the Temple every day. But this is your moment now, the time when darkness is in power.” 53 When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn’t stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
54 They arrested him and led him away, taking him to the chief priest's house. Peter followed at a distance. 54 They seized him and led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed from a distance.
55 They started a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down by it. Peter was there among them. 55 When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat among them.
56 As he sat there, a servant girl noticed him in the firelight, and stared directly at him and said, 56 A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, “This man also was with him.”
57 “This man was with him.” But Peter denied it. “Woman, I don't know him!” he said. 57 He denied Jesus, saying, “Woman, I don’t know him.”
58 A little later someone else looked at him and said, “You're also one of them.” “No, I'm not!” Peter replied. 58 After a little while someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them!” But Peter answered, “Man, I am not!”
59 About an hour later, another person insisted, “I'm sure he was with him too—he's a Galilean.” 59 After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean!”
60 “I've no idea what you're talking about!” Peter replied. Right then, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. The Lord turned and looked at Peter. 60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61 And Peter remembered what the Lord had said, how he'd told him: “Before the cock crows today, you'll deny me three times.” 61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord’s word, how he said to him, “Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times.”
62 Peter went out and wept bitterly. 62 He went out, and wept bitterly.
63 The men guarding Jesus began to mock him and beat him. 63 The men who held Jesus mocked him and beat him.
64 They put a blindfold on him, and then asked him, “If you can prophesy, tell us who hit you that time!” 64 Having blindfolded him, they struck him on the face and asked him, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?”
64 καὶ περικαλύψαντες αὐτὸν ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες· προφήτευσον τίς ἐστιν ὁ παίσας σε;
65 and shouted many other insults at him. 65 They spoke many other things against him, insulting him.
66 Early in the morning the council of elders gathered together with the chief priests and religious teachers. Jesus was led before the council. 66 As soon as it was day, the assembly of the elders of the people were gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away into their council, saying,
67 “If you really are the Messiah, then tell us,” they said. “Even if I were to tell you, you wouldn't believe me,” Jesus replied. 67 “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you won’t believe,
68 “And if I were to ask you a question, you wouldn't answer. 68 and if I ask, you will in no way answer me or let me go.
69 But from now on the Son of man will sit at the right hand of the mighty God.” 69 From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
70 They all asked, “So are you the son of God?” “You say that I am,” Jesus replied. 70 They all said, “Are you then the Son of God?” He said to them, “You say it, because I am.”
71 “Why do we need any more witnesses?” they said. “We've heard it ourselves from his own mouth!” 71 They said, “Why do we need any more witness? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth!”
