1 And Iesus answered and spake vnto them agayne in similitudes sayinge.
1 Jesus answered and spoke to them again in parables, saying,
2 The kingdome of heven is lyke vnto a certayne kynge which maryed his sonne
2 El reino de los cielos es semejante á un hombre rey, que hizo bodas á su hijo;
2 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who made a wedding feast for his son,
3 and sent forth his servantes to call them that were byd to the weddinge and they wolde not come.
3 and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come.
4 Ageyne he sent forth other servauntes sayinge: Tell them which are bydden: beholde I have prepared my dynner myne oxen and my fatlinges are kylled and all thinges are redy come vnto the mariage.
4 Volvió á enviar otros siervos, diciendo: Decid á los llamados: He aquí, mi comida he aparejado; mis toros y animales engordados son muertos, y todo está prevenido: venid á las bodas.
4 Again he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner. My cattle and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding feast!”’
5 But they made light of it and went their wayes: one to his ferme place another about his marchaundise
5 Mas ellos no se cuidaron, y se fueron, uno á su labranza, y otro á sus negocios;
5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise;
6 the remnaunt toke his seruantes and intreated them vngodly and slewe them.
6 and the rest grabbed his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.
7 When the kinge hearde that he was wroth and send forth his warryers and distroyed those murtherers and brent vp their cyte.
7 When the king heard that, he was angry, and sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
8 Then sayde he to his servauutes: the weddinge was prepared. But they which were bydden were not worthy.
8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren’t worthy.
9 Go ye therfore out into the hyewayes and as many as ye finde byd them to the mariage.
9 Go therefore to the intersections of the highways, and as many as you may find, invite to the wedding feast.’
10 The seruauntes wet out into the hiewayes and gaddered to gedder as many as they coulde fynde both good and bad and the weddinge was furnysshed with gestes.
10 Those servants went out into the highways and gathered together as many as they found, both bad and good. The wedding was filled with guests.
11 Then the kynge came in to viset the gestes and spyed there a man which had not on a weddinge garment
11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who didn’t have on wedding clothing,
12 and sayde vnto him: frende how fortuned it that thou camest in hither and hast not on a weddyng garment? And he was even spechlesse.
12 and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here not wearing wedding clothing?’ He was speechless.
13 Then sayde the kynge to his ministers: take and bynde hym hand and fote and caste hym into vtter darcknes there shalbe wepinge and gnasshinge of teth.
13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.’
14 For many are called and feawe be chosen.
14 Porque muchos son llamados, y pocos escogidos.
14 For many are called, but few chosen.”
15 Then went the Pharises and toke counsell how they might tagle him in his wordes.
15 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how they might entrap him in his talk.
16 And they sent vnto him their disciples with Herodes servauntes sayinge: Master we knowe that thou are true and teachest the waye of god trulie nether carest for eny man for thou consydrest not menes estate.
16 They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter whom you teach; for you aren’t partial to anyone.
17 Tell vs therfore: how thynkest thou? Is it lawfull to geve tribute vnto Cesar or not?
17 Dinos pues, ¿qué te parece? ¿es lícito dar tributo á César, ó no?
17 Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
18 Iesus perceaved their wikednes and sayde: Why tempte ye me ye ypocrites?
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?
19 Let me se the tribute money. And they toke hym a peny.
19 Mostradme la moneda del tributo. Y ellos le presentaron un denario.
19 Show me the tax money.” They brought to him a denarius.
20 And he sayde vnto them: whose is this ymage and superscripcion?
20 He asked them, “Whose is this image and inscription?”
21 They sayde vnto him: Cesars. Then sayde he vnto them. Geve therfore to Cesar that which is Cesars: and geve vnto god that which is goddes.
21 Dícenle: De César. Y díceles: Pagad pues á César lo que es de César, y á Dios lo que es de Dios.
21 They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
22 When they hearde that they marveled and lefte hym and went there waye.
22 When they heard it, they marveled, and left him and went away.
23 The same daye the Saduces came to him (which saye that there is no resurreccion) and axed him
23 On that day Sadducees (those who say that there is no resurrection) came to him. They asked him,
24 sayinge: Master Moses bade yf a man dye havinge no chyldre that the brother mary his wyfe and reyse vp seed vnto his brother.
24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.’
25 Ther were with vs seven brethren and the fyrste maried and deceased with oute yssue and lefte his wyfe vnto his brother.
25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother.
26 Lyke wise the seconde and the thryd vnto the sevethe.
26 In the same way, the second also, and the third, to the seventh.
27 Laste of all the woman dyed also.
27 After them all, the woman died.
28 Now in the resurreccion whose wyfe shall she be of the seven? For all had her.
28 In the resurrection therefore, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had her.”
29 Iesus answered and sayde vnto the: ye are deceaved and vnderstonde not the scriptures nor yet the power of God.
29 But Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurreccion they nether mary nor are maryed: but are as the angels of God in heven.
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like God’s angels in heaven.
31 As touchynge the resurreccion of the deed: have ye not redde what is sayde vnto you of God which sayeth:
31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven’t you read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,
32 I am Abrahams God and Ysaacks God and the God of Iacob? God is not the God of the deed: but of the lyvinge.
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
33 And when the people hearde that they were astonyed at his doctrine.
33 When the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
34 When the Pharises had hearde how that he had put the Saduces to silence they drewe to gedder
34 But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together.
35 and one of them which was a doctoure of lawe axed a question temptinge him and sayinge:
35 One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him.
36 Master which is the chefe commaundment in the lawe?
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”
37 Iesus sayde vnto him: love the Lorde thy God with all thine herte with all thy soule and with all thy mynde.
37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38 This is the fyrst and the chefe comaundement.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And ther is another lyke vnto this. Love thyne neghbour as thy selfe.
39 A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 In these two commaundemetes hange all the lawe and the Prophetes.
40 The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
41 Whyll the Pharises were gaddered togeder Iesus axed the sayinge:
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,
42 what thinke ye of Christ? Whose sonne is he? They sayde vnto him: the sonne of David.
42 Diciendo: ¿Qué os parece del Cristo? ¿de quién es Hijo? Dícenle: De David.
42 saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “Of David.”
43 He sayde vnto them: how then doeth David in spirite call him Lorde sayinge?
43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 The Lorde sayde to my Lorde syt on my right honde: tyll I make thyne enemyes thy fote stole.
44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit on my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet’?
45 Yf David call him Lorde: how is he then his sonne?
45 “If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”
46 And none coulde answere him ageyne one worde: nether dueste eny from that daye forth axe him eny moo questions.
46 No one was able to answer him a word, neither did any man dare ask him any more questions from that day forward.

  1. Comentario 22:2 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XL)

All the faithful know the marriage of the king's son, and his feast, and the spreading of the Lord's Table is open to them all who will. But it is of importance to each one to see how he approaches, even when he is not forbidden to approach It.

  2. Comentario 22:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXIX)

Seest thou both in the former parable and in this the difference between the Son and the servants? Seest thou at once the great affinity between both parables, and the great difference also? For this also indicates God's long-suffering, and His great providential care, and the Jews' ingratitude. But this parable hath something also more than the other.

And again He answered them, "Render therefore to Cæsar the things that are Cæsar's, and to God the things that are God's." 5. Cita 22:37–39 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book III, Chapters VIII–XI)

Can it at any time or place be an unrighteous thing for a man to love God with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his mind, and his neighbour as himself? Therefore those offences which be contrary to nature are everywhere and at all times to be held in detestation and punished; such were those of …
