WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 A Canticle in steps. O Lord, remember David and all his meekness,
132:1 A Song of Ascents. Yahweh, remember David and all his affliction,
2 how he swore to the Lord, how he made a vow to the God of Jacob:
132:2 how he swore to Yahweh, and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
3 I shall not enter into the tabernacle of my house, nor climb into the bed where I lie down;
132:3 “Surely I will not come into the structure of my house, nor go up into my bed;
4 I shall not give sleep to my eyes, nor slumber to my eyelids
132:4 I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids,
5 and rest to my temples, until I find a place for the Lord, a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
132:5 until I find out a place for Yahweh, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah. We discovered it in the fields of the forest.
132:6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah. We found it in the field of Jaar.
7 We will enter into his tabernacle. We will adore in the place where his feet stood.
132:7 “We will go into his dwelling place. We will worship at his footstool.”
8 Rise up, O Lord, into your resting place. You and the ark of your sanctification.
132:8 Arise, Yahweh, into your resting place, you, and the ark of your strength.
9 Let your priests be clothed with justice, and let your saints exult.
132:9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness. Let your saints shout for joy!
10 For the sake of your servant David, do not turn away the face of your Christ.
132:10 For your servant David’s sake, don’t turn away the face of your anointed one.
11 The Lord has sworn the truth to David, and he will not disappoint: I will set upon your throne from the fruit of your lineage.
132:11 Yahweh has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: “I will set the fruit of your body on your throne.
12 If your sons will keep my covenant and these, my testimonies, which I will teach to them, then their sons will sit upon your throne even forever.
132:12 If your children will keep my covenant, my testimony that I will teach them, their children also will sit on your throne forever more.”
13 For the Lord has chosen Zion. He has chosen it as his dwelling place.
132:13 For Yahweh has chosen Zion. He has desired it for his habitation.
14 This is my resting place, forever and ever. Here I will dwell, for I have chosen it.
132:14 “This is my resting place forever. I will live here, for I have desired it.
15 When blessing, I will bless her widow. I will satisfy her poor with bread.
132:15 I will abundantly bless her provision. I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16 I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints will rejoice with great joy.
132:16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation. Her saints will shout aloud for joy.
17 There, I will produce a horn to David. There, I have prepared a lamp for my Christ.
132:17 I will make the horn of David to bud there. I have ordained a lamp for my anointed.
18 I will clothe his enemies with confusion. But my sanctification will flourish over him.
132:18 I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will shine.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 132.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
