2 Комꙋ̀ подо́бни бы́ша живꙋ́щїи во ѻ҆́стровѣ, кꙋпцы̀ фі́нїчестїи, преходѧ́щїи мо́ре;
7 Не сїе́ ли бѣ̀ велича́нїе ва́мъ и҆спе́рва, пре́жде не́же пре́данꙋ бы́ти є҆мꙋ̀;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 23:1 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XLVIII)

For in the Prophet Isaiah it is thus found: "Howl, ye ships of Carthage." But in Ezekiel by some interpreters the word is translated Carthage, by some Tarshish: and from this diversity it can be understood that the same which was called Carthage, is called Tharsus.
