114:1 When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign language,
114:2 Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion.
114:3 The sea saw it, and fled. The Jordan was driven back.
114:4 The mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs.
5 Τί σοι ἐστὶ θάλασσα ὅτι ἔφυγες; καὶ σὺ Ἰορδάνη ὅτι ἐστράφης εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω;
114:5 What was it, you sea, that you fled? You Jordan, that you turned back?
6 Τὰ ὄρη ὅτι ἐσκίρτησατε ὡσεὶ κριοί; καὶ οἱ βουνοὶ ὡς ἀρνία προβάτων;
114:6 You mountains, that you skipped like rams? You little hills, like lambs?
114:7 Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,
114:8 who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of waters.
115:1 Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory, for your loving kindness, and for your truth’s sake.
10 μή ποτε εἴπωσι τὰ ἔθνη, ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ Θεὸς αὐτῶν;
115:2 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God, now?”
115:3 But our God is in the heavens. He does whatever he pleases.
115:4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
115:5 They have mouths, but they don’t speak. They have eyes, but they don’t see.
115:6 They have ears, but they don’t hear. They have noses, but they don’t smell.
115:7 They have hands, but they don’t feel. They have feet, but they don’t walk, neither do they speak through their throat.
115:8 Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.
115:9 Israel, trust in Yahweh! He is their help and their shield.
115:10 House of Aaron, trust in Yahweh! He is their help and their shield.
115:11 You who fear Yahweh, trust in Yahweh! He is their help and their shield.
115:12 Yahweh remembers us. He will bless us. He will bless the house of Israel. He will bless the house of Aaron.
115:13 He will bless those who fear Yahweh, both small and great.
115:14 May Yahweh increase you more and more, you and your children.
115:15 Blessed are you by Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.
115:16 The heavens are Yahweh’s heavens, but he has given the earth to the children of men.
115:17 The dead don’t praise Yah, nor any who go down into silence,
115:18 but we will bless Yah, from this time forward and forever more. Praise Yah!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 114, 115.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
