PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 Dođe pak u Dervu i u Listru, i gle, onde beše neki učenik, po imenu Timotije, sin neke žene Jevrejke koja verovaše, a oca Grka;
5 A crkve se utvrđivahu u veri, i svaki dan bivaše ih više.
6 A kad prođoše Frigiju i galatijsku zemlju, zabrani im Duh Sveti govoriti reč u Aziji.
8 A kad prođoše Misiju, siđoše u Troadu.
9 I Pavlu se javi utvara noću: beše jedan čovek iz Makedonije, i stajaše moleći ga i govoreći: Dođi u Makedoniju i pomozi nam.
15 A kad se krsti ona i kuća njena, moljaše nas govoreći: Ako mislite da ja verujem Gospoda, uđite u moju kuću i živite. I natera nas.
18 I ovako činjaše mnogo dana. I iziđe u taj čas.
19 A kad videše njeni gospodari da iziđe nada njihovog dobitka, uzeše Pavla i Silu i odvukoše ih na pazar ka knezovima.
20 I dovedavši ih k vojvodama, rekoše: Ovi su ljudi Jevreji, i mute po našem gradu,
22 I sleže se narod na njih, i vojvode izdreše im haljine, i zapovediše da ih šibaju.
23 I pošto ih zdravo izbiše baciše ih u tamnicu, i zapovediše tamničaru da ih dobro čuva.
24 Primivši takvu zapovest on ih baci u najdonju tamnicu i noge im metnu u klade.
25 A u ponoći behu Pavle i Sila na molitvi i hvaljahu Boga; a sužnji ih slušahu.
28 A Pavle povika zdravo govoreći: Ne čini sebi zlo nikakvo, jer smo mi svi ovde.
29 A on zaiskavši sveću ulete i drhćući pripade k Pavlu i Sili;
30 i izvedavši ih napolje reče: Gospodo! Šta mi treba činiti da se spasem?
30 καὶ προαγαγὼν αὐτοὺς ἔξω ἔφη· κύριοι, τί με δεῖ ποιεῖν ἵνα σωθῶ;
31 A oni rekoše: Veruj Gospoda Isusa Hrista i spašćeš se ti i sav dom tvoj.
33 I uze ih u onaj sat noći i opra im rane; i krsti se on i svi njegovi odmah.
37 A Pavle reče njima: Izbivši nas pred narodom bez suda, ljude Rimljane, baciše u tamnicu: i sad hoće da nas puste? Nije tako, nego sami neka dođu i izvedu nas.
38 A panduri kazaše vojvodama ove reči; i uplašiše se kad čuše da su Rimljani;
40 A kad iziđoše iz tamnice, dođoše k Lidiji, i videvši braću utešiše ih, i otidoše.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 16:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles (Homily XXXV)

was thought likely") to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul." See again Paul judaizing.

  2. Quotes verse 16:13 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XIII)

… sailing from Troas, we directed our ship's course towards Samothracia." And then he carefully indicates all the rest of their journey as far as Philippi, and how they delivered their first address: "for, sitting down," he says, "we spake unto the women who had assembled;" and certain believed, even a great many.

  3. Quotes verse 16:15 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXIII)

Hear, for instance, the seller of purple saying, "If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come in, and abide with me." Hear the women, who went about with the apostles, having taken unto themselves manly courage, Priscilla, Persis, and the rest; from whom our present women are as far removed as our men from their men.
