1 Listen to this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel:
2 Pade, neće više ustati devojka Izrailjeva; bačena je na zemlju svoju, nema nikoga da je podigne.
2 Cayó la virgen de Israel, no más podrá levantarse; dejada fué sobre su tierra, no hay quien la levante.
2 “The virgin of Israel has fallen; She shall rise no more. She is cast down on her land; there is no one to raise her up.”
3 Jer ovako veli Gospod Gospod: U gradu iz kog je izlazila hiljada ostaće stotina, a iz kog je izlazila stotina u njemu će ostati deset domu Izrailjevom.
3 Porque así ha dicho el Señor Jehová: La ciudad que sacaba mil, quedará con ciento; y la que sacaba ciento, quedará con diez, en la casa de Israel.
3 For the Lord Yahweh says: “The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went out one hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”
4 Jer ovako veli Gospod domu Izrailjevom: Tražite me, i bićete živi.
4 Empero así dice Jehová á la casa de Israel: Buscadme, y viviréis;
4 For Yahweh says to the house of Israel: “Seek me, and you will live;
5 A ne tražite Vetilja, i ne idite u Galgal, i ne prolazite u Virsaveju, jer će Galgal otići u ropstvo, a Vetilj će se obratiti u ništa.
5 Y no busquéis á Beth-el ni entréis en Gilgal, ni paséis á Beer-seba: porque Gilgal será llevada en cautiverio, y Beth-el será deshecha.
5 but don’t seek Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and don’t pass to Beersheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nothing.
6 Tražite Gospoda i bićete živi, da ne obuzme dom Josifov kao oganj i spali i ne bude nikoga da gasi Vetilj.
6 Buscad á Jehová, y vivid; no sea que hienda, como fuego, á la casa de José, y la consuma, sin haber en Beth-el quien lo apague.
6 Seek Yahweh, and you will live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, and there be no one to quench it in Bethel.
7 Koji obraćate sud u pelen, i pravdu na zemlji obarate.
7 Los que convierten en ajenjo el juicio, y dejan en tierra la justicia,
7 You who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth!
8 Onog tražite koji je stvorio zvezde, kola i štape, i koji pretvara sen smrtni u jutro, a dan u tamnu noć, koji doziva vode morske i proliva ih po zemlji; ime Mu je Gospod.
8 [Miren] al que hace el Arcturo y el Orión, y las tinieblas vuelve en mañana, y hace oscurecer el día en noche; el que llama á las aguas de la mar, y las derrama sobre la haz de la tierra: Jehová es su nombre:
8 Seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns the shadow of death into the morning, and makes the day dark with night; who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the surface of the earth, Yahweh is his name,
9 Koji podiže pogibao na jakoga, te pogibao dođe na grad.
9 Que da esfuerzo al despojador sobre el fuerte, y que el despojador venga contra la fortaleza.
9 who brings sudden destruction on the strong, so that destruction comes on the fortress.
10 Mrze na onog koji kara na vratima, i gade se na onog koji govori pravo.
10 Ellos aborrecieron en la puerta al reprensor, y al que hablaba lo recto abominaron.
10 They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks blamelessly.
11 Zato što gazite siromaha i uzimate od njega žito u danak, sagradiste kuće od tesanog kamena, ali nećete sedeti u njima; nasadiste lepe vinograde, ali nećete piti vino iz njih.
11 Por tanto, pues que vejáis al pobre y recibís de él carga de trigo; edificasteis casas de sillares, mas no las habitaréis; plantasteis hermosas viñas, mas no beberéis el vino de ellas.
11 Therefore, because you trample on the poor and take taxes from him of wheat, you have built houses of cut stone, but you will not dwell in them. You have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.
12 Jer znam bezakonja vaša, kojih je mnogo, i grehe vaše, koji su veliki, koji mučite pravednika, primate poklone i izvrćete pravdu ubogima na vratima.
12 Porque sabido he vuestras muchas rebeliones, y vuestros grandes pecados: que afligen al justo, y reciben cohecho, y á los pobres en la puerta hacen perder su causa.
12 For I know how many are your offenses, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the just, who take a bribe, and who turn away the needy in the courts.
13 Zato će pravedni ćutati u ovo vreme, jer je zlo vreme.
13 Por tanto, el prudente en tal tiempo calla, porque el tiempo es malo.
13 Therefore a prudent person keeps silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.
14 Tražite dobro a ne zlo, da biste bili živi; i tako će Gospod Bog nad vojskama biti s vama, kako rekoste.
14 Buscad lo bueno, y no lo malo, para que viváis; porque así Jehová Dios de los ejércitos será con vosotros, como decís.
14 Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be with you, as you say.
15 Mrzite na zlo i ljubite dobro, i postavite na vratima sud, ne bi li se Gospod Bog nad vojskama smilovao na ostatak Josifov.
15 Aborreced el mal, y amad el bien, y poned juicio en la puerta: quizá Jehová, Dios de los ejércitos, tendrá piedad del remanente de José.
15 Hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the courts. It may be that Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”
16 Zato ovako veli Gospod Bog nad vojskama, Gospod: Biće tužnjava po svim ulicama, i po svim putevima govoriće: Jaoh! Jaoh! I zvaće ratare na žalost i na tužnjavu one koji umeju naricati.
16 Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová Dios de los ejércitos, el Señor: En todas las plazas habrá llanto, y en todas las calles dirán, ¡Ay! ¡ay! y al labrador llamarán á lloro, y á endecha á los que endechar supieren.
16 Therefore Yahweh, the God of Armies, the Lord, says: “Wailing will be in all the wide ways. They will say in all the streets, ‘Alas! Alas!’ They will call the farmer to mourning, and those who are skillful in lamentation to wailing.
17 I po svim će vinogradima biti tužnjava, jer ću proći posred tebe, govori Gospod.
17 Y en todas las viñas habrá llanto; porque pasaré por medio de ti, dice Jehová.
17 In all vineyards there will be wailing, for I will pass through the middle of you,” says Yahweh.
18 Teško onima koji žele dan Gospodnji! Šta će vam dan Gospodnji? Tada je mrak a ne videlo.
18 ¡Ay de los que desean el día de Jehová! ¿para qué queréis este día de Jehová? [Será de] tinieblas, y no luz:
18 “Woe to you who desire the day of Yahweh! Why do you long for the day of Yahweh? It is darkness, and not light.
19 Kao da bi ko bežao od lava pa bi ga sreo medved; ili kao da bi ko došao u kuću i naslonio se rukom na zid, pa bi ga zmija ujela.
19 Como el que huye de delante del león, y se topa con el oso; ó si entrare en casa y arrimare su mano á la pared, y le muerda la culebra.
19 As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or he went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a snake bit him.
20 Nije li dan Gospodnji mrak, a ne videlo? I tama, bez svetlosti?
20 ¿No será el día de Jehová tinieblas, y no luz; oscuridad, que no tiene resplandor?
20 Won’t the day of Yahweh be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?
21 Mrzim na vaše praznike, odbacio sam ih, i neću da mirišem svetkovina vaših.
21 Aborrecí, abominé vuestras solemnidades, y no me darán buen olor vuestras asambleas.
21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I can’t stand your solemn assemblies.
22 Ako mi prinesete žrtve paljenice i prinose svoje, neću ih primiti, i neću pogledati na zahvalne žrtve od ugojene stoke vaše.
22 Y si me ofreciereis holocaustos y vuestros presentes, no los recibiré; ni miraré á los pacíficos de vuestros engordados.
22 Yes, though you offer me your burnt offerings and meal offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat animals.
23 Ukloni od mene buku pesama svojih, i sviranja psaltira tvojih, neću da čujem.
23 Quita de mí la multitud de tus cantares, que no escucharé las salmodias de tus instrumentos.
23 Take away from me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 Nego sud neka teče kao voda i pravda kao silan potok.
24 Antes corra el juicio como las aguas, y la justicia como impetuoso arroyo.
24 But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream.
25 Jeste li meni prinosili žrtve i dare u pustinji četrdeset godina, dome Izrailjev?
25 ¿Habéisme ofrecido sacrificios y presentes en el desierto en cuarenta años, casa de Israel?
25 “Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, house of Israel?
26 Nego ste nosili šator Moloha svog, i Hijuna, likove svoje, zvezdu boga svog, koje sami sebi načiniste.
26 Mas llevabais el tabernáculo de vuestro Moloch y Chiún, ídolos vuestros, la estrella de vuestros dioses que os hicisteis.
26 You also carried the tent of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.
27 Zato ću vas preseliti iza Damaska, govori Gospod, kome je ime Bog nad vojskama.
27 Hareos pues trasportar más allá de Damasco, ha dicho Jehová, cuyo nombre es Dios de los ejércitos.
27 Therefore I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus,” says Yahweh, whose name is the God of Armies.

How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
But God turned, and gave them up to worship the hosts of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets: O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to Me sacrifices and oblations for forty years in the wilderness?
