2 Blagodat vam i mir od Boga Oca našeg i Gospoda Isusa Hrista.
5 što vi postadoste zajedničari u jevanđelju, od prvog dana i do danas;
6 Estando confiado de esto, que el que comenzó en vosotros la buena obra, la perfeccionará hasta el día de Jesucristo;
10 Para que discernáis lo mejor; que seáis sinceros y sin ofensa para el día de Cristo;
11 napunjeni plodova pravde kroz Isusa Hrista, na slavu i hvalu Božiju.
12 Y quiero, hermanos, que sepáis que las cosas que me [han sucedido], han redundado más en provecho del evangelio;
13 De manera que mis prisiones han sido célebres en Cristo en todo el pretorio, y á todos los demás;
14 I mnoga braća u Gospodu oslobodivši se okovima mojim većma smeju govoriti reč Božiju bez straha.
16 Tako ovi, uprkos, Hrista objavljuju nečisto, misleći da će naneti žalost mojim okovima;
16 Los unos anuncian á Cristo por contención, no sinceramente, pensando añadir aflicción á mis prisiones;
18 Šta dakle? Bilo kako mu drago, dvoličenjem ili istinom, Hristos se propoveda. I zato se radujem, a i radovaću se;
19 Porque sé que esto se me tornará á salud, por vuestra oración, y por la suministración del Espíritu de Jesucristo;
21 Jer je meni život Hristos, a smrt dobitak.
22 A kad mi življenje u telu plod donosi, to ne znam šta ću izabrati.
22 Mas si el vivir en la carne, esto me [será para] fruto de la obra, no sé entonces qué escoger;
23 A oboje mi je milo, imajući želju otići i s Hristom biti, koje bi mnogo bolje bilo;
25 Y confiado en esto, sé que quedaré, que aun permaneceré con todos vosotros, para provecho vuestro y gozo de la fe;
28 i ni u čem da se ne plašite od protivnika; koje je njima znak pogibli a vama spasenja, i to od Boga;
28 Y en nada intimidados de los que se oponen: que á ellos ciertamente es indicio de perdición, mas á vosotros de salud; y esto de Dios;
30 imajući onu istu borbu kakvu u meni videste i sad čujete za mene.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 1:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Philippians (Homily I)

    Here, as writing to those of equal honor, he does not set down his rank of Teacher, but another, and that a great one. And what is that? He calls himself a "servant," and not an Apostle.

  2. Quotes verse 1:22 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book V, Preface)

    But the apostle himself also, being one who had been formed in a womb, and had issued thence, wrote to us, and confessed in his Epistle to the Philippians that "to live in the flesh was the fruit of [his] work;" thus expressing himself.

  3. Quotes verse 1:23 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XIV, Chapters 6–7)

    The apostle "desires to depart, and to be with Christ." And, "My soul desired to long for Thy judgments;" or if it is more appropriate to say, "My soul longed to desire Thy judgments." And, "The desire of wisdom bringeth to a kingdom." Yet there has always obtained the usage of understanding desire and concupiscence in a bad sense if …

  4. Quotes verse 1:23 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXIII)

    For no child, be he never so virtuous, is so desirable and lovely to a father, as the having our portion in those good things, and "to depart and be with Christ." No doubt hell, and that punishment, is a thing not to be borne.

  5. Quotes verse 1:19 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XVII)

    He is called also the Spirit of Christ, as it is written, Searching what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify; and again, Through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
