1 Psalam Davidov. Blagosloven Gospod, grad moj, koji uči ruke moje boju, prste moje ratu,
1 By David. Blessed be Yahweh, my rock, who trains my hands to war, and my fingers to battle—
2 Dobrotvor moj i ograda moja, utočište moje i Izbavitelj moj, Štit moj, Onaj u koga se uzdam, koji mi pokorava narod moj.
2 my loving kindness, my fortress, my high tower, my deliverer, my shield, and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues my people under me.
3 Gospode!
3 Yahweh, what is man, that you care for him? Or the son of man, that you think of him?
4 Man is like a breath. His days are like a shadow that passes away.
5 Gospode! Savij nebesa svoja, i siđi; dotakni se gora, i zadimiće se.
5 Part your heavens, Yahweh, and come down. Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.
6 Sevni munjom, i razagnaj ih; pusti strele svoje, i raspi ih.
6 Throw out lightning, and scatter them. Send out your arrows, and rout them.
7 Pruži ruku svoju s visine, izbavi me i izvadi me iz vode velike, iz ruku tuđinaca,
7 Stretch out your hand from above, rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters, out of the hands of foreigners,
8 Kojih usta govore ništavne stvari, i kojih je desnica desnica lažna.
8 whose mouths speak deceit, whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
9 Bože! Pesmu novu pevaću Ti, u psaltir od deset žica udaraću Tebi,
9 I will sing a new song to you, God. On a ten-stringed lyre, I will sing praises to you.
10 You are he who gives salvation to kings, who rescues David, his servant, from the deadly sword.
11 Izbavi me i otmi me iz ruke tuđinaca, kojih usta govore ništavne stvari, i kojih je desnica desnica lažna.
11 Rescue me, and deliver me out of the hands of foreigners, whose mouths speak deceit, whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
12 Sinovi naši neka budu kao bilje, koje veselo odraste u mladosti; kćeri naše kao stupovi prekrasno izrađeni u dvoru;
12 Then our sons will be like well-nurtured plants, our daughters like pillars carved to adorn a palace.
13 Our barns are full, filled with all kinds of provision. Our sheep produce thousands and ten thousands in our fields.
14 Our oxen will pull heavy loads. There is no breaking in, and no going away, and no outcry in our streets.
15 Blago narodu, u kog je sve ovako! Blago narodu, u kog je Gospod Bog!
15 Happy are the people who are in such a situation. Happy are the people whose God is Yahweh.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXLIII)

The title of the Psalm is, "To David himself, when his son was pursuing him." We know from the Books of Kings that this happened:...but we must recognise here another David, truly "strong in hand," which is the explanation of David, even our Lord Jesus Christ. For all those events of past time were figures of things to come.

  4. Quotes verse 144:7 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book III, Chapters VIII–XI)
