VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
3 Te autem faciente eleemosynam, nesciat sinistra tua quid faciat dextera tua:
3 Mas cuando tú haces limosna, no sepa tu izquierda lo que hace tu derecha;
9 Sic ergo vos orabitis: [Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificetur nomen tuum.
10 Adveniat regnum tuum; fiat voluntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra.
10 Venga tu reino.
11 Danos hoy nuestro pan cotidiano.
Amen.]
17 Mas tú, cuando ayunas, unge tu cabeza y lava tu rostro;
18 ne videaris hominibus jejunans, sed Patri tuo, qui est in abscondito: et Pater tuus, qui videt in abscondito, reddet tibi.
19 Nolite thesaurizare vobis thesauros in terra: ubi ærugo, et tinea demolitur: et ubi fures effodiunt, et furantur.
19 No os hagáis tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y el orín corrompe, y donde ladrones minan y hurtan;
28 Y por el vestido ¿por qué os congojáis? Reparad los lirios del campo, cómo crecen; no trabajan ni hilan;
Scit enim Pater vester, quia his omnibus indigetis.
34 Nolite ergo solliciti esse in crastinum. Crastinus enim dies sollicitus erit sibi ipsi: sufficit diei malitia sua.

Why does my Bible say something different?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon VII)

    The order established for your edification requires that ye learn first what to believe, and afterwards what to ask. For so saith the Apostle, "Whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord, shall be saved." This testimony blessed Paul cited out of the Prophet; for by the Prophet were those times foretold, when all men should call upon God; …

    In like manner also, that [text] which says, "Ye cannot serve two masters," He does Himself interpret, saying, "Ye cannot serve God and mammon;" acknowledging God indeed as God, but mentioning mammon, a thing having also an existence.
